Not sure on what you mean by investigation. If you mean trying to find the title for the frame in question, I can't help there.

I have titled several out of state Broncos here in NC. Anything over 35 years of age with an out of state title requires a physical VIN inspection by a DOT/DMV po po. You will not get a NC title until you get that done.

Depending on the inspector, they might check the frame and body for VIN's. I've had some that just looked at the glove box door. I've had others that knew right where the frame VIN should be and checked it as well. It is a roll of the dice as far as that goes. There is no associated fee with the inspection but you do need to either bring it all by their office during their office hours or schedule an inspection at your address. They may or may not show up on the day you set up, in which case you'd have to set another appointment up if they didn't show. Gotta love the govt.

I don't think I'd progress very far without getting it all squared away first.

That is what I am trying to figure out how to square it away. I will try to find the local dmv office as I knew where it was next town, county over but not sure here in this town and county and see if they can give me any help or should I call Raliegh?

The other question I have is the glove box vin matches the title other then a 7 for the engine code and the extra 9's. Still trying to figure out the 7 figure the 9's are just a dmv mistake some where in the past.

That was a typo done at some point. They will probably overlook that and get it corrected. I had a 1 digit error on the title for my chevelle and they squared it away. I would think that they'd be ok with yours but who knows for sure.

To set an appointment up, first you need to hand in your VA title to get transferred to NC. After that they will instruct you on how to set up getting the inspection done. It won't be out of the same office that you visit. They will probably just give you a phone number. The DOT office here is up near the university and they only answer phones from 8a-10a weekdays. You can't just schedule an inspection without first handing in the title and all that, at least that is what I was told. Good luck calling Raleigh....

Inspection not investigation. Stupid swype!

Wasn't referring to your post chuzie. You do have to love how the phone makes up words though.

Is there anything in NC that says the vin has to be visible on the frame?

If not, grind and paint then go to marti and have a door jamb vin plate printed to match glove box vin. I would think that should be sufficient to give the inspector a warm fuzzy.

I ran into this with my 72 I bought from GA two yrs ago. The PO told me all three matched (title, glovebox vin and frames vin). I was really after the uncut tub, everything else was a plus. Well I went to transfer the title in my name and they said they needed to see the permanent vin on the vehicle. I musta got the bronco nazi bc she refused to accept the original GB door with vin plate. She pointed out to me that there is a vin stamped on the frame. So I went back to the frame, used a wire wheel and paint stripper and eventually found a stamp. My luck the stamp did not match the title, it was a U14. So my aspirations of having a 72 was over. So now I went searching for a title with a matching frame that can easily be viewed. That's where I found a 77 frame and matching title for $150. Days later I took the frame and title to the DMV and they came out and verified the frames vin. They transferred the title to my name.

My next step is to get a Marti report. I want to get the report, GB vin plate and if possible the door stickers. It may cost a few dollars but I want to do that. I'm debating on going with the stock color paint.

There are lettered punch sets out there. Ford has the original tooling but I don't think DMVs know the difference. I had a 1/4" set that I punched for the rear of my frame. If you go this direction practice on spare metal bc double stamps of the same letter or number looks bad. Remember, modifying a frames vin is illegal as I was told by my DMV. I could have grinded off the vin on the 72 frame and stamped it myself but I just went ahead and searched out a title and matching frame.

My final post for the morning, sorry I'm bored. I suggest posting a thread in the want ads of this website or Classic and ask for a title with matching frame. All other vins are temporary vins and are not the "official" vin for that vehicle. Get a title that matches the sellers name is a big plus too.

As for frame and glove box vin, before I post a wanted add on classic I will call a guy locally that has 10 sitting on the hill and see if he has titles for them and is willing to sell a frame and title, before you get all ansy that he has 10 on a hill he already told me he has stollen the best stuff off of them. Although I have only talked to him on the phone not sure what that means but it will be an option.

As for the guy that is the parts manager over at Ford truck enthusiasts he told me like I though there was never a 7 in the vins for engine code although my glove box door has one there. Not saying anything bad as I agree with what most have said at some point in time at the factory is was a mis punch. Unfortanetly the door jam sticker has too much damage to make out if the po just changed the glove box door or changed the whole body.
