8.8 Cross Pin bolt damage - Bronco Biff - 07-30-2014

I was wondering how the cross pin did not come out!! I had one come out cruising down the interstate at about 70. Went "BAAAM" then no drive. By the time I coasted to the side of the road all of the gear oil had relieved itself out of the big gaping hole in the bottom of the Dana 60 housing.

Boy does that sounds like fun biff... On a d60, no less...

I give up... Snapped the retainer bolt. Drilled it out and tore up the carrier... Going to the junk yard to find a complete axle assembly... Maybe I'll get lucky and find one with a LS in the same gear ratio. Some days I wish I'd just stick to programming.

Well that's no good! Hope you find an axle

If all else fails, I'll just yank the 8.8 out of the trail rig... That'll leave room for an upgrade on it, right?!

....I wound up patching the hole in the housing and getting a DANA "Powerlock" 4 pinion clutch type carrier and putting it in with the same ring and pinion and has worked extremely well. Pulls both wheel much better than it ever did and has lived through some pretty heavy thrashing. My baby bro had one mess up in his '95 Bronco and put in an Auburn cone type limited slip on the same ring and pinion with excellent results....
