Family trip May 20-22nd - JayT - 05-19-2011

And this just came in to my inbox... from the FS.... So there may be more than trash pickup... If you can help, great! If not, no worries.

Hi Everyone - Sorry for the late timing of the update for this weekends work weekend. We'll be meeting at 9 am at the Uwharrie Hunt Camp. You may not be working on the trail you've adopted but we're stretched a bit thin with 7 people off on fire and timber details. We appreciate you coming up to volunteer this weekend. It sounds like great weather for Saturday. If you'll need campsites contact Janet Becker ASAP. Thanks.

The overall projects will be repairing corduroy crossings, armoring crossings with rock (6 to 8" size), cleaning out tail ditches with shovels and rakes, clearing any down trees and large branches, hauling out old corduroy crossings, repairing some split rail fences, and remarking trails with the diamonds and marking the numbers on the trail markers and picking up trash. If you have a trail trailer please bring it along with straps and chains to haul in supplies for the corduroy crossings and the rock armoring. Bring ratchets or wrenches and sledge hammers. I'll have some of the adopt a trail signs so we'll have them to put up for a few trails. We'll have the rock piled up in Dutch John and we'll have our tractor there to load it into people's trailers. What ever we don't finish this weekend we'll do in June, July....

At this point, I will plan on meeting at 9am at the Hunt Camp. Anyone know where that is??? Is it on a map somewhere? I will have an open seat for some trail riding later on/trash pickup.

Hunt camp is down the street from the Outpost (going toward Troy) Turn R at the first road, the Camp is on the Right. It's near the road you take to the start of Daniel.

You'll still have to unload at the double parking lot since the only way to get anywhere from the hunt camp is a regular forest road.

sounds good. i'll plan to be there about 8:30-8:45. gotta work on the bronco. it isn't wanting to start. no juice. i think it is a loose connection somewhere. if i can't get it going, i'll just throw the race rig on the trailer.

whew, that was a work day, fo sho. When we got there, we all met and the park rangers went over the tasks. We decided to work on some cordura (how ever it is spelled) on Dutch John, near the end of the trail below the big hill climb. For those (like myself) who don't know what cordura is, it is the log bridges that help in stream crossings. They use about 10' lengths of telephone poles and place them over stream crossings and then use wire cable to secure them together. We had to remove one of those sections. We used a winch to drag the bridge out of the muddy mess. We then had to pick each one of those slimy poles up and move them out of the way. Next, we had to pick up about 3 trailer fulls of rocks from various spots where rocks were plentiful and spread them across the stream crossing.

After that, we had to take apart a cordura section and add about 8-10 logs to it. What a day. We met at 9 and worked till about 3pm. Everyone was drooling over Nick H's bronco. JT's group had 14 and we had 3 in ours. Had to leave right after we finished to get home. Hope we can all get together and do some wheeling in the near future.

I wasn't there with them. I was up there with a TJ and LJ from NC4x4 but here are the only pics I got.

I brought the camera but didn't take a single pic sorry. One person in our crew took a few pics and the district ranger took some as well. Hopefully they will post them up on the NC4X4 board. We definitely WORKED yesterday, Throwing rocks and draging/carrying logs is not my idea of a fun day wheeling, but with the crew we had, we actually got a lot more done than the bigger crew so that was good, of course I'm a little sore today but not too bad. It was a really good thing it wasn't much hotter. Got to meet some other people and the forest service rangers. Terry was really glad to finally see some people from the club at a work day, so it was definitely worth it to show up. I have a more favorable view of at the 2 rangers that were there, they seem genuinly interested in keeping the trails open and they were both very appreciative of the work that gets done. I now truely believe that if there were no volunteers to help with the work, they would probably just close the trals. As it stands, not only are all the usual trials open, they are working on a re-route for the Saw-Mill trail, and are planning on re-opening at least one of the older trails and possibly another so there might be 2 new trials to ride on soon

It would be nice to get some more of the CB4X4 members out for another of the scheduled work days later this year if possible. The next one I would be able to attend would be August and anything more strenuous than trash pickup on a hot day would really be terrible. I'm thinking later this fall when it's a bit cooler.

Of course, now that I have a year pass, I need to get out 5 more times to make it pay for itself, so I talked to Charles and I think we're going to try schedule a few pure wheeling days and maybe even a couple of full weekends if it works out.
