URE Sat. Sept. 21, 2013 Work Day - BucknEB - 09-19-2013 Questions? Does the forest service supply tools? Is there anything we should bring extra? URE Sat. Sept. 21, 2013 Work Day - snipes243 - 09-19-2013 The forest service has the normal shoves and garbage bags. From talking to Charles we will be redoing the log bridges again. Which the forest service will provide the cable, logs, cable cutter and cable clamps. It would be awesome if we could get cable puller, That tool made life 10x easier last time. URE Sat. Project Area 3: Repair & dismantle the log crossings on Dutch John Trail. I have flagged 4 log crossings on Dutch John Trail with the numbers starting at 1 at the Slab Pile end of the trail. I would suggest that the crew starts from the Wolf Den end of the trail and take cable from those log crossings to use at the last 2 crossings. Here is what Iâd like the crew to do at each site. Site 1 â Log crossing closest to Slab Pile Trail â Replace 1 broken log and move cable on the downstream side of crossing to a new anchor tree that is flagged that is closer to the stream. Move the boulder with winches or rock bars up stream about 2 to 3 ft to get it out of the way. Then realign the logs and tighten both cables. There is an armored crossing just around the corner that needs to have more rock put in it (see the flagging on site). Use rocks from the creek and locally from the areas next to the trail to armor this area where the ATVs are going around the tree there. There are 4 new logs next to site 1 to use at 1 & 2. Site 2 â Log crossing going back toward Wolf Den Trail at the bottom of the rocky area next to guardrail â Replace or add 3 logs here and realign and tighten cables. Site 3 â Log crossing that is long and has never really worked well. Take log crossing apart and save the cable & good logs. Reuse good cables & clamps at Sites 1 & 2 if needed. Armor crossing with rock from the local area â from the trail tread and hillside that is to the north and west of this section. Make this a rocky ford. Keep the good logs and cable. Take the good logs out to the Falls Dam Trailhead and put them in the grassy corner of the trailhead. Toss the bad logs out into the woods off the trail as best as possible. Whatever cable isnât reused at sites 1 & 2 can also be brought out to the Falls Dam Trailhead. Site 4 â Log crossing that is on the first big crossing when coming from the Wolf Den Trail end. Take the log crossing apart just like # 3 above. Log crossing that is long and has never really worked well. Take log crossing apart and save the cable & good logs. Reuse good cables & clamps at Sites 1 & 2 if needed. Make this a rocky ford. Keep the good logs and cable. Take the good logs out to the Falls Dam Trailhead and put them in the grassy corner of the trailhead. Toss the bad logs out into the woods off the trail as best as possible. Sept. 21, 2013 Work Day - broncosbybart - 09-19-2013 That is the official word guys. I KNOW we can't get it all done, but I really think we can get the 2 bridges fixed and the other 2 dismantled. I doubt we can drag all the logs out, but I'm sure we can stack them out of the way for now. We will need to split into 2 groups to get it all done. I don't care how we split up, but we will need to tackle all 4 bridges and I'm hoping to grab about 4 more people to help, giving us a total of 12, or 6 per group. I think that Nick should head up one group and I can head up the other, as we just rode it last weekend and know pretty much what needs to happen. The 4 bridges aren't exactly close together, but at least they are paired up, which means that minimal time will need to be spent transitioning from one bridge to the other. Good news is that we are fixing the little bridges and dismantling the big ones. That should be a big plus. For any who have not been to a work day before, please bring: -plenty of water, snacks, and a trail lunch. I usually make PB&J. -good work gloves, pants, boots, and a work shirt. We will be working with a lot of old cable, so thick gloves would be best. Keep in mind that we will be playing in the creek, so a change of clothes/shoes will probably be in order. -mosquito repellant if you care -a working winch (if your vehicle is equipped). A snatch block and tree savers would be helpful, too. For hand tools, we could really use a few BIG crow bars/wrecking bars, 2sledge hammers, socket set(s) for the cable clamps. That is about it. If any of you have a battery powered angle grinder with a cutting disc, that would make life much easier. I don't have one of those. The forest service has 1 cable splitter that we might end up having to share, if need be. That is about all I can think of. Look forward to seeing you guys Sat. I'll be at the outpost between 8:30-8:45 to unload and get ready. We'll roll out to hunt camp at about 8:55. A late lunch/early dinner will be provided at around 3pm. We'll be tired by then, I'm sure. We can do this!! THANK YOU!!! URE Sat.
