Anyone in the charlotte area know any thing about engines? I need some help diagnosing some engine problems on the bronco. I am not very good when it come to engine / water pump / fuel issues. The bronco will start but will not stay running. The RPM's drop after running for about 5 to 10 mins, then the bronco shuts off. Can restart, but will do the same thing again. Was wondering if there was anyone in the charlotte area that know about engines, and would not mind coming over on some weekend to help figure out the problem. Would be glad to supply the beer or what ever you want. Thanks,

Yvon

Have you checked for codes?

1990 FS with 302 - chuzie - 09-22-2008

Carb or EFI.

What you are describing sounds like and EFI issue to me. There are so many sensors and possibilities in those systems we really need to try and start with a trouble code to make life easier. Is the engine light on after it starts?

Here's a cheaper way to check the codes than buying a $40 code scanner.

IAC? Have you cleaned the IAC or throttle body? May be choked with soot.

If cleaning the iac doesnt help, check the distributer control modual. WHen they go bad they start ok, but when it gets warmed up they cut off. I saw so many when I worked for ford I made a bypass modual so I wouldent have to change them out side the shop. Just keep in mind it takes a special socket to get the 2 screws out. If you have a spare one I can tell you how to make a bypass for it. You will need an extra harness connector.

broncomatt, I would be interested in hearing about your bypass regardless of the outcome here.

Yvon - Have you changed your plugs, wires, solenoid since last July 4th at Tellico? I know it's probably not related to this problem specifically, but those connections were corroded awful at that time.

I had similar troubles in my 90... I could keep it running (barely) by driving with both feet... ended up being Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). Might not be the same problem, but code scanner will help.

BTW, I have an EEC scanner and book of codes if you need a reference.
