Axle lengths? - johnpaulgolf - 12-29-2008

Big bearing 72-75 axle shaft length ... 2nd mini-spool to blow up ... I'm only getting about 1/2" into the splines inside the spool on the drivers side... anyway I think if my axle was 1/2" longer It would be about right ... My question is how to measure the length and what should it be???:biggthumpup:

I have done all the checks with the axles ect. I would also need to know housing length's and how to measure. Confusedcratchhe:

Thank you in advance for you time and help!!! :rockon:

I feel like my drivers side rear axle is to short. I think I might have a different 9" housing out of maybe a car and then have a EB type alxe. There are welds outside of the current spring perch welds ect. Its big bearing 72-75 I would think but no other way to tell. It would not surprise me cause this Bronco has been a bunch I mean a bunch of parts just thrown together. Anyway alot of blah blah blah just to bring this back to the top!!! :hysterical:

HELP!!! Confusedcratchhe:

A bunch of parts thrown together.... sounds just like my junk. I never know what make and model to tell the guys at the parts house anymore.

I don't have anything laying around to compare your stuff too. Maybe the boys on classic or bfix could shed some light.

Do you have the metal tag on the diff? What about casting or identification of some sort on the housing?

If you have the shafts removed there has to be something etched onto them.

This is a visual for the housing

and this guy goes pretty in depth into the 9" variations

Ok I'm sure this is what I'm supposed to have but how do you measure them?

From the tip of the axle to the outside of the bearing ... or ... from the tip to the wheel studs ... ?????? Confusedcratchhe:

Thanks ya'll :notworthy:

I believe these measurements are from the face, where the wheel mounts, to the end of the splines.

But as you said before, what you have and what you should have could be two different animals. I have a mix breed CJ5 that I'm fixing to look at for a buddy. It has 60's front and rear. Both have been narrowed to CJ width. Bad thing is the long side inner front axle is broke and I can't find a stock axle 29.5" long. I told him I would sell these and drop in a set of full widths. :popc1:

This what I just got ... outside of face where wheel goes on =

Drivers= 29 5/8" inside= 29 back of bearing=27 3/8"

Pass. = 30" inside= 29 3/4"back of bearing=28 1/8"

So axle inside housing= 55 1/2"

Housing= 57 1/4"

Difference= 1 3/4
Allright then the pin= 7/8"

So total difference= 7/8"

My stock 74' spare small bearing axle= 53 1/2

Make any since???

The axle on the left is definitely too short. Don't know why or what it came out of, but it should engage the same length as the one on the right. It actually looks like you may need close to the same length axles on both sides. My guess would be that the axle was transplanted from a car or station wagon.

Maybe it is time for 1 tons:xyxthumbs:

So did you come to a conclusion on your axle issue? What are you going to do?
