99 Powerstroke ticky-tick - Timstrk - 05-19-2009

Slowing down for a stoplight and something under the hood started ticking loud and fast. Thinking to myself, "Self, this isn't a good thing" I shut it off in traffic, hit the flashers and coasted backwards into a parking lot across two lanes of traffic. By traffic I mean Barnwell, SC and the eight or ten other cars around me at the time. Was puffing out volumes of billowy white smoke. Not associated with the chip added to the computer. Called the guy I bought it from and its at his shop now. Won't know until tomorrow what the damage is. Seems like everything under the hood has a $500 price tag on it. Injection pump, turbo, etc.... Haven't made the second payment on it yet.

man the last time I seen tons of white smoke my buddy blew his head gasket in his SC thunder bird I hope that isnt the problem

Water pump go bad? Was the smoke coming from under the hood or out of the exhaust? That is a 7.3L. It shouldn't have head gasket problems. But I guess stranger things can happen.

Haven't heard back from the mechanic yet. It was diesel smoke, some from under the hood and most from the exhaust. I'm thinking turbo. Sounded high up in the engine compartment and kind of tinny. All guages were in their normal operating ranges so no lost oil, no overheat. Still waiting.

OOhhh...Guess if the turbo took a dump it would be a good time to upgrade?Confusedcratchhe:

I haven't priced one but I'd say that a replacement might be pricey. Did you ever get the 4" exhaust installed?

No such luck. Injector tip broke off into the cylinder. Beat the crap out of the piston. Poured fuel into and hydrolocked it. Mech pulled the glowplugs to get it to turn over and shot fuel all over the shop. Looking at right around $2k to fix a 10 yr old truck that I made the second payment on today. Thats the min. Have yet to get the head off to find the tip and see if the head is ok. May have to move the plate back to the Ranger and park the big dog until the money tree blooms.

That my friend is a sucky turn of events.
Maybe you can find a used 7.3 and swap it out?

Sorry to hear it was so major.

99 Powerstroke ticky-tick - SC74 - 05-20-2009

Dang that really sucks Tim! I'm like 66stocker - you could probably swap another 7.3L in for cheaper, but it still hurts to do anything to a truck so new to you.

OUCH! Just sell the kid's bus to fix it Smile

Man,that sucks pond water. They dont break often but when they do, it usually sucks.Maybe the damage wont be any worse.
