if I change my gear ratio in the rear say to a 4.10 would I also need to change the gear in the front to a 4.10 just wondering if I could slide with just the rear for a while but dont want to tear $h!t up which I seem to be good at

yes you have to swap them on both ends. you can do the rear first and do the front later but do not put the t-case in 4wd !!!!!!!

Poor man has poor was...I've swapped the rear gear and pulled the front driveshaft till I got the cash to put the gear in the front. Also good if your not completely sure of the ratio you want. Swap the rear and drive. If it is not what you want, swap it again till you get what your looking for. I did this recently with a buddies TJ. He thought 4.88's were going to be to steep. Then he ended up bring me just the front axle after he wrecked it:crying:. But its back together and ready to wheel now.

I had an 88 lx 5.0 a while back and had 4.10s put in it I was amazed the differance a gear swap would make over the stock. Tore the overdive out of it raceing my buddys 97 Hendricks addition camaro ss, 130+mph and 4.10 isnt a good combo. Is the gear change harder on the tranny or anything when you drive like you got some sense? Or does it relieve a little stress on things Oh yea, bout forgot I did beat the ss

Its mechanical advantage. Just like a 10 spd bicycle. The lower the gear the easier it is to pedal. But you have to pedal faster to get the same forward travel speed.

So there is a happy medium somewhere. If your Bronco is geared 3.50 from the factory, you upgrade to 35" tires and 4.56 gears will put you back close to the factory final drive ratio. Meaning your speedo should be correct and you will turn close to the same rpm's at highway speeds. Bump up to 4.88's and your going to turn about 2-300 rpm's more at a given speed, but the engine will not work as hard getting to that speed.

Exactly. I went with 4.56 gears and I am currently running 32's. Which will be replaced with 33's. I love the extra power I have. I had been talking about doing gears for a few years but never had the money. I wish i would have done it earlier.
