Rust Pits - ELWOOD - 07-12-2009 I took my fender all the wat to the bare metal. What do I need to do about rust pits? Do I need to spray or treat them with something? I don't want them to come through new paint. Rust Pits - bucketobolts - 07-12-2009 I use a product from Lowe's made by Jasco called Prep & Primer. All you have to do is knock the scale and dirt off, apply a coat of the Prep & Prime, and rinse off as directed. If the entire fender is bare I'd treat the entire thing. This will turn the metal sort of a blue and the rust will turn black and stop. I like to use epoxy etching primer on the bare metal. It is expensive but will bite to bare metal and hold. You can fill the pit with high build primer, glazing puddy, or plastic filler if needed. Be sure to paint the bare primer, because it is porious and will let moisture back down to the metal. I treated a rear end housing several years ago. I wire brushed it, treated, etched primed, and painted with Duplicolor black laquer from Autozone. It sat outside at the edge of woods for 3 years. Rinsed it off with the water hose and it looked like the day I painted it. Rust Pits - sparkchaser - 07-12-2009 x2 I can't remember the name of the stuff I used but it was an acid based chemical that actually kills the rust.I used some on my rear quarter panel before putting flares on. Rust Pits - Badass - 07-12-2009 you could use por15. it converts rust and stops further issues. its pricy. Rust Pits - ELWOOD - 07-12-2009 Thanks guys. I'm trying to make this as nice as I can with what I've got. I'm still learning this body stuff. Rust Pits - bucketobolts - 07-12-2009 I'm by no means a body guy. But I have a couple friends that are excellent body men. I always like to look over their shoulder and ask lots of pesty questions when I'm by their shops. That way I don't have to nag them about working on my junk. Rust Pits - ELWOOD - 07-12-2009 I hear ya. I appreciate any help I can get. |
