Diesel? - bucketobolts - 11-24-2007

I work with a bunch of guys that own Diesels. They have all the brand covered; Duramax, Power Stroke, and Cummins. I've asked questions about power and mileage, but haven't yet made since of it all. Right now I'm getting 15-17 mpg around town and get closer to 18 on the highway if I keep it between 65-70. I recently pulled my trailer to Rocky Mount, about 200mi one way, loaded a car, and pulled it back. When I got on the interstate I set the cruise at 75. With the car loaded on the way back I ran between 70-75 when I could. I noway impeded traffic for long. Anyhow my truck averaged 13.5mpg on the trip.

I get any where from 12-13 to 15-16 mpg from the guys at work telling me about towing with their trucks. And some say they only get 15-16 around town other have said 21-24. What are you fellas getting?

I'm having trouble talking myself into a truck that costs about $10K more than what mine is worth and paying $3.50 gallon for fuel to go in the larger 30 gallon tank.

I'm thinking I may just invest in a set of air bags for the rear of my 1/2 ton for now.

around town 19-20
towing (depending on wieght)14-15
i am looking at buying a diesel just have to find the right one. my ram has 129,000 miles. the weekend of nov. 9-11 i pulled a stock rubicon jeep to ure. to go 220 miles round trip it took a full tank of gas (34 gallon tank) and started burning oil (3 quarts) my way of looking at it is i can buy another gas truck and replace it in say 5 years or buy a diesel and keep it til the wheels fall off. just my opinion.

2000 F-250 4X4 Powerstroke 7.3 with a programmer. I get 18-20 around town and have got 29 on interstate averaging 65 mph. I don't do that all the time, usually around 25/26 mpg. I just pulled a 40' 14,500 lb. camper to Myrtle Beach and got 13 1/2 mph running the speed limit. If I had a good pulling gas truck that was mechnically sound, I'd be hard pressed to lay down the cash just to get the diesel unless I was planning to do some hard pulling often!
