Here's what one looks like when it lets go. Heard a funny scraping noise.

yep, it's done. good catch on finding it. that is something you don't see very often.

Just ordered a Scat balancer and a billet aluminum pulley. I was told I was paranoid for worrying about the slight sound I heard. Good thing I was paranoid!

Stupid question here. I read somewhere about someone putting some RTV on the crank so the oil doesn't leak from around the balancer . Does this sound right?

I think the RTV is a temp fix. You need to buy a Harmonic balancer sleeve. It will stop the oil leaking. The trick is to place the sleeve in the freezer the night before you put it on the crank and it will slid right on the you will be able to put your new Harmonic balancer on. Click on the link and you can see what one looks like.

Hope this helps.

so what did it sound like?

Mill Knob, it wasn't leaking before. It is a new motor where we just re-used the balancer. Brand new Scat crank. The sleeve you are showing is for repairing a seal surface that has a wear spot in it right? So this means I won't need anything?

Chuzie, the noise sorta sounded like a light scraping noise with every revolution. It was hard to pinpoint. I thought it was my distributor or something in the timing set for a while. Glad it was something easier .

go ahead and put some RTV on the crank. it won't hurt. probably wouldn't matter, but i always put some on just for good measure when they're apart. just don't go crazy with it.

You are correct in my Book. You need nothing if it is a new crank. But Broncobybart said to so I guess you can do what ya want to.

Good Luck.

I usually put just a drop in the key way before I install the balancer. The inside diameter is machined tight enough to seal, but the only hole is the key way.

Thanks for all the advice. I did one before but it was a long time ago. I guess when I first thought about it I didn't think there was any path for oil but I guess there is. Should get my balancer and new pulley this week.
