8.8 Cross Pin bolt damage - JayT - 07-29-2014

So.... my 94 seemed to be acting/sounding weird starting at 60mph-ish... With this, and the speedometer bouncing like crazy, I figured I'd try a new VSS sensor... No luck... Got worse... Reluctantly pulled the cover off the 8.8... Oil looked great (no visible shavings, no chunks)!... But then... out popped the cross-pin bolt... Everything looks fine, except this bolt of course.... Do I tear it all apart, and check it out completely, or do I just get a new cross-pin bolt and fill er up?

Correction... it tore up the Vss tone ring... man, I really don't want to rebuild/setup the gears on this, if I take it all apart...

That sucks, you may not need gears. Pull the rest of the spider gears out and inspect the ones that ride on the shaft. If there the only parts that are worn you can get just a spider gear set.

Thanks... i don't see any damage, to gears, just the one ring... If I yank it all out to replace tone ring, I'd think it's the right time to do carrier bearings, and all... since it's disassembled anyway... wondering if it's worth that, or just put in a new bolt and deal with a non-functioning speedometer.

I would like to know what happened to the bolt to begin with.

Seems to have just backed out, after 223k miles of usage.... removing the carrier and all the guts tonight.. Guess that will tell me what to do... I'm hoping carrier bearings are good, so I will "only" need to press on a new tone ring, and replace the bolt. Worst part is that now Jill is happy because now we're taking the k5 to the beach, not the bronco.... grrr.

Loc-tite mofo!

No doubt! Especially since they come from the factory with some thread locker on them!

But I stand corrected... this one didn't back out... I went to disassemble it, and what do you know?! It's still in place! Someone has been in this diff before, judging by this "extra" part, and the RTV gasket seal... Thankfully no gears are damaged. It looks like the "extra" bolt stayed on the vss side of the ring gear, not the drive side. Now, I'll just have to judge the carrier bearings once I get it all out. The joys of previous owners!

Nice... The 92' I had years back needed a tone ring. At some point someone did away with it for whatever reason. You can pull the carrier and reinstall it without worrying about gear setup. Just be sure you keep the shims on each side of the carrier in check and you'll be fine.

Have fun!

Boy, that is precisely what I'm hoping for, bart... I was shocked to see the retainer bolt in place when I went to pull the carrier... Tone ring on order from jbg... We'll see what happens when I get it back together next week (headed to the beach this weekend, regrettably in the k5l)... Will keep y'all in the loop
