Type F vs. Dextron PS fluid - chuzie - 05-30-2008

I used to use Type F with my stock 77 PS pump and box but now I am running a pump from a 96 Explorer (V8) with my stock box so the question is...

do I use Type F for the sake of the box or Dextron for the sake of the pump.

I used to know the answer to this question but it has be a WHILE since I have had to deal with PS issues.

Thx.

Ya. I know that type F is more abrasive than Dex and it is even more abrasive than PS fluid itself. I just want to make sure my box and pump can perform together correctly.

Dextron III and Mercon both have friction modifiers in them. The type F doesn't.

I switched to regular power steering fluid after I swapped to a saginaw style pump. I've had no pump or gear box troubles..

That is what I was looking for, someone who has had positive results. I know the Pump can handle the fluid but was just worried about the box getting pissed off.

Now I have to figure out how to effectively flush out all the old type F from my system so I can introduce the PS fluid. I think this will cost some $$$ in PS fluid since that box holds so much of it.

Pull the return off of the pump and run it to a bucket and cap the fitting on the pump. Fill the res and start the motor. Keep adding fluid till it runs clean out the return. You will need an assistant and the fluid will drain pretty fast.

And by assistant you mean my other arm right?
