Front wheels jerk when in 4X4-any ideas? - cwdanie - 08-01-2008

Hi Board,

My new Bronco runs great, only problem seems to be when I engage 4X4 the front wheels jerk and wobble when I turn the steering wheel. It's very noticable - probably jerking the tires several inches each way (left and right) when I turn.

Does anyone know what the problem might be?

Thanks, Clint

Do you know if the front diff. is open or locked? It sounds like a locked up front end.

I'm not sure. How would I know?
Thanks, Clint

Jack your front end up. Turn a wheel, if the other turns in the same direction. Its locked. If it turns in the opposite direction. unlockedConfusedupergrin:

I also post on another forum and the guys over there are telling me it's completely normal for the front wheels to jerk back and forth w/4X4 b/c I was on pavement.

I used 4X4 to pull a very large boat out of the water on wet pavement with worn tires.

They said there is no problem with my truck, and that I should never use 4X4 on pavement and if you do the tires will wobble very bad when you turn the steering wheel.

Does this sound correct?? I'm really concerned b/c it the wheels were going back and forth like they were having a seizure. ;-)

Thanks for replies,
Clint

Yes, that is right. The front and rear gears are rarely ever the same- exactly. 4.10 in the rear, 4.09 in the front. Close enough in the mud, dirt, snow etc. On pavement there is better traction and one end has to give up the difference. This happens as tire slip in the dirt but not on pavement. Walking back and forth is the trucks effort to equal things out. Low range without locking the front hubs, if thats an option, auto hubs and all, would work to pull the boat.
hope this makes sense,

I have 10 years experience in front end alignment service and you guys nailed it. It is perfectly normal on pavement. If it does it anywhere else there might be a problem.:xyxthumbs:

Ditto - 4x4 on pavement or concrete will cause that. Like said above, next time try low gear and don't lock the hubs.

I think you could even have some bad u-joints...they may be frozen up without grease. Just a thought,Chuck

The real issue is that it says F O R D on the front and rear. Smile
