Axle carnage - bucketobolts - 08-09-2008 I drove my Bronco to work Friday night. Been tinkering with my tune on the carb a bit and think the Demon has been excised. Anyhow I pulled into the parking lot and there was most of the guys. Of coarse I had to give in to peer pressure and do a burn out. Started power braking in low, shifted to second, and at this point John Force would have been proud.:notworthy: I let loose of the brake and went to high gear. BANG!!!:banghead: I went to neutral and stabbed the brake. Slipped the tranny back in gear, didn't hear the driveline flopping. So I guess thats good. I pulled up to turn around to park and I couldn't feel the spool grabbing. Hmm, it didn't make any noise when I moved forward or back, so the carrier, pin, and spool must be alright. I came out at lunch to jack it up to see which side was broke and sure enough the drivers axle selfdestructed. I even managed to limp her home 22 miles peg legged. Drove really squirrely but safe enough to get home.:xyxthumbs: I've been doing some studying and ciphering. I'm not going to spend a lot of money on this small bearing 28 spline axle. Though, I may fix it and sell later, 4.56/spool with disc brakes. I have a full width big bearing out of a big Bronco. It needs a ring and pinion, locker/spool, and a good set of axles with disc brakes. Choice number two is a full width Dana 60. Nothing special, just 30 splines and needs a locker/gear set. Will need to convert the axle to 5 lug or new set of rims and swap the front axle out also. Already set up for discs Then choice number three. I have a little Dana 70HD that I got from Broncomania. It is a narrow 55", which is not far from the EB axle width of 58". Already has a 35 spline Powr-Lok diff and 6.17 gears. I will have to fab up a set of wheel adapters(will help make up the extra width) and change the ring/pinion out. Also I will have to do a cheap disc brake set up. Axle carnage - bucketobolts - 08-10-2008 I've really been leaning toward the 70. I believe it is out of a Ditch Witch trencher. It doesn't have brakes and has a 5 on 8" lug pattern. It could be from a rough terrain lift, but only being 55" wms-wms would make it unlikely. I'm going to tear it down and see if I can find a set of 8 lug hubs to fit the spindles. Then use an adapter back to my 5 on 5.5 wheels. BTW this has 31x15.50 15's on 15x15 rims... Axle carnage - johnpaulgolf - 08-10-2008 Rock that!!! Axle carnage - chuzie - 08-10-2008 70's all the way. Sounds like fun. Axle carnage - bucketobolts - 08-13-2008 Here are some more pics of the D70. I moved it in the garage and have started tearing it down. I'm trying to find a set of hubs that will fit the spindles to convert it to a usable bolt pattern, either 8 or 5 lug. Will also have to get a set of axles made with a flange to fit the new hubs. I would also like to shave the big lip off of the bottom of the housing like Gubni said. Axle carnage - johnpaulgolf - 08-13-2008 Nice...go boy go!!! Axle carnage - bucketobolts - 08-14-2008 The flange on the axle measures 5 3/8". The center pilot on the rims is 5 3/4". The overall OD of the hub is 9 1/2" roughly. Too large to fit any wheel or rotor that I know of. The rotor in the pics are from an '80's K20. I have them for my D60 disc conversion. I've got a fella getting a few measurements on a '70's Ford D70 dually hub. Hopefully there is enough meat to bore out to my bearing cup diameter. Axle carnage - bucketobolts - 08-17-2008 I found some more trivial information today. Seems a 10.25 Sterling uses the same cup races on the inner bearings. I'm trying to cross my seal #'s over to see if they are the same also. Then I'll have to find out if there is enough material in the outer part to machine about .200" for my outer race. I'm going to try to make it to the Pull-a-Part to look for a set of Sterling hubs. Axle carnage - bucketobolts - 08-22-2008 Alright, sort of a spur of the moment trip to the pull a part this morning with a couple guys from work. I was going to just look for a set of Sterling hubs to experiment with for the D70. Well long story short I ended up hauling home a whole axle. Found this beauty under a late '80's F350. It has 4.10 gears and a Trakloc. I ditched all the brakes, plan on discs. Axle carnage - Ogeechee 4x4 - 08-22-2008 :xyxthumbs: |
