My '90 FSB drivetrain recommendations
#1
Whelp... This is a long-story, cuz I never have any that are short. So just ignore this post if you want a quick-hitter.

My 90 has just informed me, not so nicely, that it's tired of being back-burnered for the EB/Excursion/K5...

About 5 miles from home on Saturday, something didn't seem to be stirring the kool-aid. It was only a 40 trip to Smithfield and back, so I don't know what it could be other than pure jealously of the EB...

I lost all power to the ground. The 5.0 never hesitated, and still runs solid, but nothing getting to the ground. Crawled under and saw no signs of anything "wrong" until I look at rear diff.. Call me crazy, but, smoke is not normally something you should see from a 8.8, right?!

Now this is where I got stupid. I figured that the rear was stripped... so fawk it.. threw it into 4H, locked the hubs and started to get my butt home, cuz I am independent and don't need any help from anyone! Whoops. Now, my rig is safely parked 2 miles from home in a nice school parking lot.

Dropped the rear driveshaft and noticed that, much to my surprise, the pinion spins freely. Not anywhere near smoothly, but it turns with both tires on the ground, so that... uh... sucks.

While pulling the rear DS, I noticed a good amount of "leaking" from the rear output of the T-case, so I suspect some internal damage there too... Caused by my impatience and "needing and excuse to upgrade"...

All of this leads up to... (in my true Upgrade-don't-just-replace mentality)... What do i build next? I HATE not have anything for crawl ratio.... So instantly, I'm thinking NP205/203 doubler and a C6... Along with saying buh bye 8.8 for a 9"....

I suppose the '90 heard that I had promised Matt to have the '66 at the Nov run and was pissed off... Granted, I always had planned on keeping the 90 as my "Tank" and keeping the 66 as Coop's DD... but dang, son... why you gotta force my hand like this?

I'm sharing this story with my Bronco family, for sharing sake, and also for opinions on what to put in, for a drivetrain, now that I have this "opportunity".

Thanks!

dayum...that sucks! if you got the money to build it or upgrade, thats fine...but if not...fix what you have!! go to a pull yard and replace the stuff. otherwise, you might end up over building yourself right out of a rig to drive. ive done this a few times, that sucks even more. more than likely...you broke the spider gears or ring/pinion. the tcase should be chain...it should split in half to check it out
