I was looking back through some old posts and stumbled across this thread. I've learned a lot since then that makes me glad I didn't do the "cash for Clunkers" program. 1 of the biggest kicks in the pants is that if you take any of this money, $3500 or $4500, it has to be counted as income on your '09 taxes. You don't gain a thing but you do get to pay more taxes. 2nd you have to keep your newer unit for at least 2 years before you can trade it again. (I'm not real sure about this one.) And there was something else but I can't remember what that was. ( one of the luxuries of being 65 yrs. old!! LOL) Anyway, this was a bad deal all around.
