Just saw the rest of your post. I have considered using a pin and cotter key. Problem is, if I drop the key, I am done. I like the round wire lock mainly because it is attached.
It is spring steel, so I can probably tweak it so it keeps more pressure on the pin to prevent inadvertently coming off as you described.
