4.0 Bronco II Swap
#1
Right, well I've found a fella local to me who has a 1992 Explorer Sport, with a 5 speed. The top end on the motor was rebuilt last year, and the guy was having trouble paying off the repairs. Well the clutch just went on it, and he couldnt afford to make the repair, so now its sittin, and he's just looking enough money to pay off what he owes for the previous repairs! ($500)

So waddya think, should I spring for it? It sounds like it'd be a pretty good candidate for a swap, but is there anything I'm overlooking? It is a 4x4, so I shouldn't need anymore parts to keep my 4x4 correct? Is the Explorer dana 35 any wider than my BII dana 35? (basically is there any reason that an Explorer dana 35 would be better than the one i've already got?) Would the driveshafts be the same length as those on my BII, since the Sport has a shorter wheelbase than the normal 4dr Exploder?

I've had someone offer me $500 for my spare BII, so I could sell it and go buy this. I'd just give the guy his 500 bucks since he's short on cash, don't wanna haggle with someone who needs the $$ more than me. Still seems like a reasonable price for my swap if its got everything I need!?

Any of those questions you could answer would be appreciated, as would any input towards the swap! I'm not askin for help with wiring or any of that nonsense, as I know I've got to figure that out for myself lol!

Thanks!

You've found a diamond in the rough! The 4.0 will practically bolt in. The wiring is the biggest issue and there's plenty of help on either < www.therangerstation.com> or on <broncoIi.org>. Use the harness from the donor and replace the oem harness, less problems that way. The Dana will bolt in fit and it is just a tick wider than stock, not much at all. i don't know about the sport model but I wouldn't let the driveshaft hold up the swap. There's enough shops around that can change the length of your driveshaft.
You didn't say but I hope your B2 is stick shift. You won't have to worry with the electric harness for the auto. That's about it. Just about 2 weeks of work and staring at wiring diagrams should get you what you want!! Good luck !!! :xyxthumbs:

Like Clint said, you need to use the harness that comes with the engine. If you currently have an auto. trans. you may need an.auto computer to run an auto, but if you want the manual you should be good to go.The explorer may run a speed sensor on the rear axle, not sure about the b2.If need to be, just swap the rearend.
Stupid hurts when it catches up, and it WILL catch up!

Yea I'm well aware of how easy the swap is, which is why i'd prefer this over a 5.0 at the minute. Plus the 4.0 gets the same, if not better mileage than the 2.9, plus you've got the added power, so its a win win situation!

Im a member at both TRS and BII.org and ive read all about the swap. This thread is more about announcing my intentions than askin for help hahaha! Wiring doesnt phase me at all, i enjoy siftin through wires and the reward when ya finally turn the key and she fires right up! Tongue

Basically i just need to get a wiring diagram for both the trucks, match up the different wires and either splice them together or re-pin the plug! Pretty simple! The driveshaft length isn't a concern, i just wondered if I was gonna by some chance get lucky and be able to reuse the Explorer ones without machining! But nothing in life can ever be that easy so I'm not getting my hopes up! Tongue

The slightly wider axles would be a bonus, if nothing else just for stability. I thing theyre 2 inches wider so you gain an inch on each side. That and I'd have a nice beefy 8.8to put in! Big Grin

The biggest problem right now is my dad. Im already not allowed my second Bronco II on our property so I'm really struggling to convince him an Explorer is a good idea! Tongue

Oh and i move back from Ireland a week from today! Big Grin And then next friday i get to drive my parents from greensboro to atlanta in my Bronco, towing our motorbike trailor so my parents can get 2 of their cars and start bringing them back, and i can start bringing a few of the motorbikes back!

You would be very happy with the 4.0 swap.. Nothing on a BII would stand up to a 5.0. Let us know how it turns out.
