Fixing the Turd
#1
Going to try one more time to fix the big truck. I'm 0 for 2 with "Professional" mechanics but I got a price the seems reasonable. Turn-key repair from where it is now to where it needs to be. Hoping it turns out better than the last two go-rounds. Taking it to the shop a week from Fri and then back to me in 2-3 weeks. I'm in no hurry, obviously. It's been on the driveway for about eight months. Keep your fingers crossed.

I wondered where you disappeared to... good to see you post up again. So the 2nd round didn't go well I assume - what happened?

but didn't realize I'd actually gone anywhere. The indestructable 7.3L Powerstroke. Yeah, right. I've killed two of them in less than 6K miles. Turns out the second one, donor motor, had a rod knock. Didn't know if it was just diesel rattle or an actual knock when we fired it up before taking it out of the donor truck. Bad wrist pin, rod upper end. I'll know more after the post mortem when it comes back. I'll tear into it and assess the damage. Second mechanic, Ford Powerstroke trained in Atlanta, swore it was an injector knock. Not. Full set of rebuilt injectors later I still have a knock. And $2K less in my wallet. Did the rebuild on the original engine myself. Removed every valve to check and make sure they were straight. Check. Rod was straight. New bearings on the bottom and new piston on the top and back in it goes. No scratches on the cylinder wall. New head bolts, head gaskets, oil pan. Rest is going to the shop for swapping and installation. Hope to have it back before Uwharrie trip in Nov. Should with no problem and time to drive it around a bit. Told mechanic-next to keep it and drive it around til it was perfect. He said he would. May never get it back with those instructions.......

The turd went to the shop yesterday. The mechanic came by and got the engine. Should be two to three weeks before we get it back. Fingers are crossed that we don't end up 0 for 3.

I will pray for you Tim because you luck stinks and you need all the prayers you can get. Good to see you are still up and kicking. Haven't seen you around in a while and was starting to get worried. Can we expect to see you @ URE in Nov?

That's the plan with the turd leading the way. That's why we bought it in the first place. Did get to drag the toy to Gulches one time before it all went awry. Should get it back in time to put some test and confidence miles on it. Still a gorgeous truck but it just doesn't move.
