Accord Tie rod separation phenomenon
#1
So my "friend" called me up the other day hysterical because her 97 Accord was stuck in the middle of the road after she heard a loud bang and then the car would not go anywhere.

Some folks helped push it to a parking lot and upon arrival, I inspected the vehicle to find the link between the tie rod and the steering rack had separated from the rack and allowed the left wheel to toe in uncommanded; which is why the car would not move.

I assumed this rod had snapped somehow but found that the threads and even the lock washer were all intact and there was no explanation for the occurrence.

I had to wait for a new lock washer and spacer to arrive at Honda before I could reassemble the link. Today I fixed it and it's working fine. Just can't imagine what could have caused that link to come loose. I am glad it happened at 10mph and not 70!!!

No one had a ball on their vehicle that u could borrow a washer and nut from instead of ordering one?
If you can't fix it with a hammer and a welder then your gonna need a new one!

Actually, it was a stopper washer and lock washer that were pretty specialized and specific to the setup. In other words, it was not something I could just steal from another car or purchase at the hardware store. See diagram below to aide in removing foot from mouth; you two knuckle heads. ^ :thefinger::beer::crying::biggthumpup::banghead:  :xyxthumbs::hysterical:
