Thats horrible! Just imagine how low mine will be with my old 302. Ill be lucky if I have 100hp.

Yours did sound badass though!

Chuzie's monster transformation - Casey835 - 11-28-2012

Have you had a chance to see what happened. Do you think it was just stressed from wheeling and or age or do you think there was another reason that aided in the failure?

Chuzie's monster transformation - chuzie - 11-28-2012

Haven't looked at it yet. I will be back in Charleston next week and will start investigating. I know why it happened... we decided to use the impact to tighten it instead of a torque wrench. I can't recall if the nut was new or not and I don't think run-on torque is even a factor for those nuts. Either way, I will implement a locking device once all is said and done. More to come.........

I have had to change the pic size to 640/480 to get mine to post. See if that works. The pinon nut is ment to be reused but after a few times I like to put some lock tight on. Impacting on is sometimes ok, your impact must atleast put out 180 ft lbs (thats the min torq spec) or it can back off. It also depends on how many times you have reused the crush coller.
My big question is how much damage did it do?? How is your foot healing??

Chuzie's monster transformation - chuzie - 12-03-2012

I pulled it apart today. The damage was not as catastrophic as we originally thought. The ring and pinion were worn abnormally, the case was notched slightly by the ring gear but not enough to compromise the structural integrity of the case. The bearings appeared to be okay but they are getting replaced as a precaution. No other damage that I see. Should finish the setup tomorrow.

I did find the remains of a seal spring stuck to my magnet in the bottom of the axle housing although all three seals in the rear end have their springs accounted for. Not sure where it came from.

Gotta go find a large torque wrench tomorrow because we don't have one that goes that high and I am not taking my chances with the impact this time. Also bought a spare nut for final assembly.

Found out the other day my foot is fractured in multiple places. Joy!

Dude sorry about the foot, are you still able to fly?

Chuzie's monster transformation - chuzie - 12-05-2012

Uhhh, I am going to go with "no comment."

I'd rather ask for forgiveness than permission if you know what I mean.

Bronco is back on the road. Finished setting up the new rear end today. Still have to fix a small leak on the back of the axle housing where the 4-link truss is welded to the back of the pumpkin.

Chuzie's monster transformation - chuzie - 12-06-2012

Cut off part of one of the truss supports from the back of the pumpkin today to try and find the source of the leak. I hooked up shop air to my breather line to pressurize axle and sprayed some glass cleaner on axle to locate holes.

Found at least three areas that are pinhole in size but still allowing fluid to leak. We are going to try and braise them tomorrow.

Not sure how they got there though. Maybe to much fatigue from frequent power applications???

Fingers crossed!
