So what's the plan with this little Bronco?
Daily driver? Big bad off road rig? Somewhere in between?

Thanks guys! I'll keep em coming as I wrench on her... Anyone find the time/money tree yet?

My goal is a street friendly, but never hesitate to hit the trails, kind of rig. If I'm in the mood to break some stuff, I'll take the 90, but the 66 won't be afraid of hitting the trails! I'll throw it in a hole, or the woods at any given time. I just have to remember that they're tiny axles.

And berg, I'm also planning on man-ing up and running the 3 on the tree.. :xyxthumbs:

Hells yeah... Got the frame all patched up today... Gotta grind the welds down some (pretty them up) and then it's just about time for paint! Put in an order at Toms (bearings, seals, brakes, etc), so I should be ready for the wrenchfest next weekend. I think the body will be on, and might even be blasted by the end of the day, Saturday... (We'll see how much we get done before the party and car crushin' begins Saturday night!)

Thank you Robert, Aaron & 66stocker, your motor mount dimensions were spot on... I got the old JUNK ones off and the frame cleaned up. Gotta weld on the semi-new one's from Chris (HighPressure), but the measurements ya'll gave me look like they'll work perfectly.

Stay tuned... I'll post some pics after the wrenchfest next weekend.

Just a quick update... After the wrench fest for my b-day, we got the D30 torn down, and body back on and halfway sanded down...

I've since been struggling with the gears in that D30. Got the 3spd cleaned up and also the D20... The trans and xfer are ready to go back in... New seals, new gear oil... If we could just get the pinion gear to come in just a bit more, we'd be set on the front end and we'd be dropping the power plant in!

Had to call it a day after 12 hours with that D30 (about 30-40 attempts)... Backlash - Perfect! Pinion - dead center between Heel and Toe of the Ring gear. It's just extremely high to the top side of the ring gear. Brought (adding shims) the pinion in so far that I can't go any further without hitting the carrier. It's still too far to the top of the ring gear. Thoughts, almighty gurus? If it helps, the shim stacks are at 70thou on the ring side of the carrier - 20thou on the other end... Pinion is 75thou inner and 95thou outer... :banghead:

Thanks,
JayT

So, the trick is to have the right carrier (thanks for the reminder - JP).... I was putting the 4.10s on a carrier made for 3.70 and lower. :banghead: A few more tries on the right carrier and Bam! Painted perfect!

Got the drivetrain installed this weekend. Motor sits a little high, so I can't bolt body down. Gonna rework the motor frame mounts tonight, fab up a rad mount and fire the beast up... Then brakes, I hope. :popc1:

Here's a couple "progress" pics...

Thanks, Robert... I so stoked that I figured out how to setup my own gears. All in all, not that bad of a job, once you get over the learning curve. We'll see how they perform once I get the ol girl running.

JP, I'm still pushing... just got back from the shop... finally got the motor to sit just about where it's supposed to be... I don't know if you can tell in the pic above, but it was leaning WAY aft, causing the driver's side valve cover to hit the firewall, which then caused the body to be too far back (1-1/2" or so) from being bolted down.

I have to lower the motor another 1/4" (easy), weld up motor mounts, bolt body on, fab up rad mounts, install gas tank, run brake and fuel lines, hook up shifter linkages, install steering shaft, and put in seats... As JP says and.... and.... and... and... Unfortunately, no more shop time for me until Thursday. I'm off from noon on, so we'll see. Thankfully the Big Bronco is ready once I swap tires and wire up winch.

So, Thursday is gonna be a LONG night. When you hear mad snoring friday night, it's coming from my tent in site 32 - don't be alarmed.

Looking good JayT, you going to strip and paint the body before you drop it on for good?
Bringing the full size will give you a chance to test out those new bumpers:toothy12:

Yeah, I was planning on doing a lot before dropping it in for good, including paint, but I'm right now, I'm just throwing it together in hopes to get it to URE. It'll be ugly, but then again, so will the trails! yikes. maybe I ought to concentrate on the locker on my FSB instead.

The body is junk, anyhow, so painting it is a joke at this point...
