Figured I give a little up date and some pics to keep broncosbart motivated. So awhile back we had planned to build like a tubed out truggy or bruggy for broncosbart. But as you all know he scoop that other nice 68 half cabConfusedupergrin:. So we cut a frame in half just behind the radius arm mounts. So after not being able to dig up another frame we started welding it back together. What we decide to do was take strip of angle iron and plug weld then to the inside to help align it. Then we are gonna plate the frame on the top, bottom and outside of the frame. The inside is still a possibility but are unsure because the cut is right were the trans mount is at. and the plasma cutter is bad ass awesome.

So any thought or ideas are appreciated. Also where has people seen these frame fail?

Thank you for posting those pics Clay. Got some more done today. The frame is pretty well welded back together. We used angle for each of the interior corners of the frame box section. The angle was plug welded and then the joint was butt welded. The exterior of the joint will have plate welded to it (it will actually be the location for the new radius arm mounts)..

I guess those last 2 pics were out of order. Anyhow, the next project is cleaning the frame up and modifying it a bit. All the shocks will be mounted to the cage, so the shock mounts were cut off. The rear springs will be moved back a few inches to stretch the wheel base a little. The front radius arm mounts will be cut off and new mounts fabricated for use with some heim ends. The huge metal 'bumper' on the front is going to be cut off and something else fabbed later on.

I had seen someone modify some radius arms using some tubing a while back. Looked pretty nice, so I thought it would be best to copy the design. The tube is 2" OD 0.250" wall DOM with 1-1/4 heims.

Between the new band saw, the plasma cutter, and the angle grinder, just about anything is do-able. Here are some pics of the frame. It is not quite all cleaned up yet. Should be done tomorrow, weather permitting. Got a full Argon tank and new wire in the welder, can't wait to start having some fun...

The frame had some rust issues, especially at the rear shock mounts and spring perch mounts, where dirt and crud quickly collect. I will likely plate those areas to add some strength to it. Hope to do that tomorrow as well.

i like that idea for extended radius arms. lemme know how it works out.

ECORS Class A race rig build - SC74 - 12-17-2010

Did you put any bend in the arms?

ECORS Class A race rig build - broncosbybart - 12-18-2010

Nah, no bend in the arms. The rules for A class only permit a 33" tire. Tire clearance should not be an issue with a 33. The other issue would have been finding a machine able to bend the tube. It is stout!

A HUGE thanks to Aaron (bucketofbolts), as the C-4 is now in his garage and will be fully prepped and modded by him. At least something on the truck will be done right!!!

You definitely got the right man for the job there! :xyxthumbs:

Keith and I built arms like that. He has a set on his buggy and JP had a set that we made for him. We did add bend to them with our ProTools bender - broke the die but re-welded it and gusseted it to make it stronger than before and it continued to work. We also used .250 wall tubing - overkill but why not.
