Gearing and Crawl Ratio's - johnpaulgolf - 05-15-2008 broncomatt Wrote:JP, I would go with lower axle gears. My rule has always been with 33" = 410 or lower, 35"=456 or lower and 38" and up 513 gears. I would not rely on trans and t-case just to make the ratio. Matt thanks for the input...I will be getting 4.56 gear when Chuck get his new D-60's I am going to buy his old axles with disk brakes and 4.56 gears. Right now a good start and better "crawl" can be acheived quick with just a new tranny. Make since? bucketobolts Wrote:I started out with the NP435, a T shift case, 4.56's, and 35" tires. With the original 302, I could let the engine idle(800 rpm) in low gear low range, and it was hard to stall the engine with manual brakes. I had several stumps in the yard I used to play on by letting it idle up and across them. Aaron, thanks for all you advice I hope to be in that same situation you described shortly. But again don't you think the NP435 alone with my T-case will give me alot better crawl now? The numbers say so, I hope that will be a good start anyway. Gearing and Crawl Ratio's - bucketobolts - 05-15-2008 The NP will double your low gear, but still have 1,2,&3 close to your current 3 spd. You will have a big difference, but I think what everyone is getting at is that you need to make a plan and work up to it. That way you don't waste time and money buying and selling parts. Sounds like you have one though. You might need to solicit a work party when you get ready to install the NP. It is a heavy "B". Well I hope that I can "bum" some help from Chuck since I'm trading him a J-shift T-case for an adapter I need for my NP435 so hopefully we can get it in with no hassles. Gearing and Crawl Ratio's - bucketobolts - 05-15-2008 Do you have any body lift? I installed my NP at first with out a lift. I cut the entire top off of the tunnel and made a removable cover. But with 2-3" you won't have to have as big of a hole to install it. I really like the removable cover mod. I swing the passenger side door around to the front fender, stick my cherry picker in thought the door, and use it to drop the tranny. Much easier than trying to us a jack. My buddies tranny jack won't even reach the bottom of my pan with out adding blocks of wood. |
