'75 Rear end "re-do" Gears, shafts, etc - chuzie - 06-23-2011 Starting a thread to document the changes I am making to the 9" rear axle on my '77. The housing is from a '75 so it is the medium duty/ large bearing variation specific to the 74-75 model years with the 10" drums. I have been running stock 3.50 gears, 28 spline axle shafts, and Lock Right to turn my 35s for many years. I frequently find I do not have the ability to turn the tires like I should in some off road situations. That, combined with the broken axle shaft incident at URE last November, I have decided to "re-do" the rear end. Here is what is on the menu: 4.56 gears 31 spline super duty axle shafts 9" master overhaul kit 31 spline side gears Rock guard Ideally I would have preferred to upgrade my Lock Right to something stronger, but I do not have the funds available just yet so I will have to risk destroying the lock right for now. I realize the USA Standard Gear is a value set but they are made by Yukon just not polished as much. Noise is not a concern considering I am running aggressive rock crawling tires. 35x12.50R15 Pit Bull Rocker Radials (bought those today too :biggthumpup Unfortunately, when you change gearing in the rear, guess what else you get to do? That's right, spend more $$$ to replace the front too!!! :banghead: My front axle is from a '77. It has the stock 3.50 gears as well as a Lock Right. I installed a chromo inner and outer on the right side in 2009 after a break and for some stupid reason (money), I did not purchase one for the left. I am taking this opportunity to rectify that as well. So the menu for the front is as follows: D44 master overhaul kit Left inner and outer chromo shafts 4.55 Gears Rock guard The total for the above items was around $1,375 from Jeffs Bronco Graveyard and Randy's Ring and Pinion Parts were ordered today but since I am still deployed, things will have to wait until I get home. Stay tuned for more... :popc1: '75 Rear end "re-do" Gears, shafts, etc - GOODOLEBOY84 - 06-23-2011 chuzie you can pick up the 9 inch detriot lockers on ebay front the nascar teams farily cheap, just look for one that is a b case, it is the correct bearing size for your case '75 Rear end "re-do" Gears, shafts, etc - broncosbybart - 06-23-2011 GOODOLEBOY84 Wrote:chuzie you can pick up the 9 inch detriot lockers on ebay front the nascar teams farily cheap, just look for one that is a b case, it is the correct bearing size for your case what he said. '75 Rear end "re-do" Gears, shafts, etc - Crawdad - 06-23-2011 Thx for creating me a parts list! I'm looking forward to this upgrade! Good luck & come back safe! '75 Rear end "re-do" Gears, shafts, etc - chuzie - 06-23-2011 I looked and there is nothing available right now Any other suggestions where I can get a used one cheap? The lock right has ALWAYS been faithful but i am concerned with the new axles and tires and gearing it may be come the weak link. I did find one for $325.00 but that seems high. '75 Rear end "re-do" Gears, shafts, etc - chuzie - 06-26-2011 Anyone? Does $325 for a used Detroit Locker sound like a deal or not? '75 Rear end "re-do" Gears, shafts, etc - broncosbybart - 06-26-2011 Sold mine for $275 and thought that was fair. If it were me, I'd probably wait a bit unless this one is either brand new or used a few times. '75 Rear end "re-do" Gears, shafts, etc - chuzie - 06-26-2011 Pretty sure it is used and there is no rush with it. Just want to get the parts together. '75 Rear end "re-do" Gears, shafts, etc - chuzie - 06-27-2011 Maybe someone can answer this question for me.... As you know, I am looking at picking up a Detroit for my '74 9" 31 spline from ebay too. Does anyone know what variants of the Detroit locker I can get and be able to change out to the 2.891 bearing? I know the Detroit P/N for our application is 187s-17b but no one on ebay uses those part numbers for used stuff. In other words, I am pretty sure I need a locker with a journal of 1.785. The question is, which of these larger bearings (3.062, 3.250, etc) already installed on these lockers also share the same journal diameter I need to accommodate the 2.891 bearing? |
