'75 Rear end "re-do" Gears, shafts, etc - chuzie - 06-23-2011

Starting a thread to document the changes I am making to the 9" rear axle on my '77. The housing is from a '75 so it is the medium duty/ large bearing variation specific to the 74-75 model years with the 10" drums.

I have been running stock 3.50 gears, 28 spline axle shafts, and Lock Right to turn my 35s for many years. I frequently find I do not have the ability to turn the tires like I should in some off road situations. That, combined with the broken axle shaft incident at URE last November, I have decided to "re-do" the rear end.

Here is what is on the menu:
4.56 gears
31 spline super duty axle shafts
9" master overhaul kit
31 spline side gears
Rock guard

Ideally I would have preferred to upgrade my Lock Right to something stronger, but I do not have the funds available just yet so I will have to risk destroying the lock right for now.

I realize the USA Standard Gear is a value set but they are made by Yukon just not polished as much. Noise is not a concern considering I am running aggressive rock crawling tires. 35x12.50R15 Pit Bull Rocker Radials (bought those today too :biggthumpupSmile

Unfortunately, when you change gearing in the rear, guess what else you get to do? That's right, spend more $$$ to replace the front too!!! :banghead:

My front axle is from a '77. It has the stock 3.50 gears as well as a Lock Right. I installed a chromo inner and outer on the right side in 2009 after a break and for some stupid reason (money), I did not purchase one for the left. I am taking this opportunity to rectify that as well.

So the menu for the front is as follows:
D44 master overhaul kit
Left inner and outer chromo shafts
4.55 Gears
Rock guard

The total for the above items was around $1,375 from Jeffs Bronco Graveyard and Randy's Ring and Pinion

Parts were ordered today but since I am still deployed, things will have to wait until I get home.

Stay tuned for more... :popc1:

I looked and there is nothing available right now Sad Any other suggestions where I can get a used one cheap?

The lock right has ALWAYS been faithful but i am concerned with the new axles and tires and gearing it may be come the weak link.

Define "cheap" so I have an idea what I should be going for price wise. I did find one for $325.00 but that seems high.

Anyone? Does $325 for a used Detroit Locker sound like a deal or not?

Sold mine for $275 and thought that was fair. If it were me, I'd probably wait a bit unless this one is either brand new or used a few times.

Pretty sure it is used and there is no rush with it. Just want to get the parts together.

Maybe someone can answer this question for me....
As you know, I am looking at picking up a Detroit for my '74 9" 31 spline from ebay too.

Does anyone know what variants of the Detroit locker I can get and be able to change out to the 2.891 bearing? I know the Detroit P/N for our application is 187s-17b but no one on ebay uses those part numbers for used stuff. In other words, I am pretty sure I need a locker with a journal of 1.785. The question is, which of these larger bearings (3.062, 3.250, etc) already installed on these lockers also share the same journal diameter I need to accommodate the 2.891 bearing?
