Starting a thread to document the changes I am making to the 9" rear axle on my '77. The housing is from a '75 so it is the medium duty/ large bearing variation specific to the 74-75 model years with the 10" drums.
I have been running stock 3.50 gears, 28 spline axle shafts, and Lock Right to turn my 35s for many years. I frequently find I do not have the ability to turn the tires like I should in some off road situations. That, combined with the broken axle shaft incident at URE last November, I have decided to "re-do" the rear end.
Here is what is on the menu:
4.56 gears
31 spline super duty axle shafts
9" master overhaul kit
31 spline side gears
Rock guard
Ideally I would have preferred to upgrade my Lock Right to something stronger, but I do not have the funds available just yet so I will have to risk destroying the lock right for now.
I realize the USA Standard Gear is a value set but they are made by Yukon just not polished as much. Noise is not a concern considering I am running aggressive rock crawling tires. 35x12.50R15 Pit Bull Rocker Radials (bought those today too :biggthumpup
Unfortunately, when you change gearing in the rear, guess what else you get to do? That's right, spend more $$$ to replace the front too!!! :banghead:
My front axle is from a '77. It has the stock 3.50 gears as well as a Lock Right. I installed a chromo inner and outer on the right side in 2009 after a break and for some stupid reason (money), I did not purchase one for the left. I am taking this opportunity to rectify that as well.
So the menu for the front is as follows:
D44 master overhaul kit
Left inner and outer chromo shafts
4.55 Gears
Rock guard
The total for the above items was around $1,375 from Jeffs Bronco Graveyard and Randy's Ring and Pinion
Parts were ordered today but since I am still deployed, things will have to wait until I get home.
Stay tuned for more... :popc1:
