Automatic Trans: Why does the engine die as soon as I put it in Park or Neutral???? - UTFLIWGYA - 08-01-2013

77 EB, 3 spd auto, 302 with carb

So, The EB starts fine, drives like a champ and idles normally.....but as soon as i shift to Neutral or Park, she dies.....sometimes chokes and dies.....

Is this a "mechanical" issue or an "electrical" issue?

Thoughts???

Thanx guys

Likely mechanical. The only electrically related issues would be a NSS but that only prevents starting in neutral or park so that is not an issue.

I would lean toward a vac leak. Does your exhaust smell rich? What is your idle speed in park and drive? I don't see how your TC could cause this as it would be the opposite and die in drive.

......seems easy enought to test nuetral safety switch...find where the nuetral safety switch plug is by the steering column where it comes up from shift lever on the tranny. Start the truck and then unplug the switch and see if it does it......sounds like it is shorting the hot side of the coil, which I could see might happen if it was '75 or earlier with points, '77 should be electronic, right?

Test light or volt meter on the coil would tell ya, too!

NSS only comes into play when cranking. It just prevents from starting in gear, cant interrupt ign signal while running. It truly sounds like a carb issue, probably a vacume leak. Try spraying around the carb and engine vac lines with carb or brake clean. If the rpm picks up you have found your leak. Do this checking with the air filter housing on to get a true reading of a leak.

All: Thank you

Chuzie and Bronco Matt: Concur. The exhaust is rich and the idle is fine. I am going to have to check the vac lines as you described. Brilliant idea.

Bronco Biff: My 77 has points and a 2-brl carb. The EB will start in Park and Neutral. I'll have to try to locate the switch you are describing.

More to follow......as the adventure continues........

I also would lean towards vacuum leak. Follow the thin rubber hose that goes from the modulator to the back of the carb...
