Master cylinder help - snipes243 - 08-19-2008

Ok So my master cylinder went bad. So Im trying to decide either to get a stock one or get an upgraded one, what do you guys think? I have drums front and rear but have started looking the parts to do a front disk conversion.

try a late 70's F-250...I ran that for a while, even had it when I added disc in the front.

I ran a Corvette MC with disc in the front. It was kind of like redneck PB too - I could hardly tell a difference when I added a booster with a Bronco MC.

Is there any modifications need for either?

The Corvette was a bolt on - don't know what year or make but I might be able to dig it up tonight and get a part #. It's just got a bigger bore in the MC so it pumps more fluid to the brakes than stock.

I converted to the '78-79 F250 master cylinder when I first did my front disc conversion. Be sure to get a "camper special" or dual piston caliper application. I has a large 1 1/8" piston which works really well without a booster. I had no problems stopping with 35-36" tires. I even ran it when I added my rear discs with no issues.

Now I have added the hydroboost assist and run an '80 Corvette master cylinder. It is designed more for the disc/disc brakes. I swapped because my booster was off of an Astro van and had a narrower mounting bolt pattern.

Another tidbit, I still do not run a proportioning valve. Mostly because I have been too lazy to redo my lines. I have an aftermarket adjustable version to limit the rear and keep them from locking up to easily. But like I said before, I've had no problems yet. In the rain I try to be careful with the panic stops to prevent spinning out, but you have to drive really careful in the rain anyhow with a spool in the rear.

Do I have to reuse the push rod for either the corvette or camper edition?

Its been a little while but I don't think I had to modify the rod. You may want to browse the Tech articles on ClassicBroncos.com I'm pretty sure there was an article on there about the conversion.
