I'd have more luck selling the kid than the bus. Should have the head off tomorrow and know whats going on for sure. I'll update then.

dang tim i really hate to hear the bad news. if you decide to get a replacement 7.3 we all can keep a look out for one in our area. i know a few yards with late model stuff . hope you get it back together soon.

They got the head off today and the piston is broken. The injector tip is planted firmly in it but it rattled around enough to break the piston which also bent the valves. Head work, bottom end, can't find all the pieces of the piston. Exhaust? Turbo? Looking for a replacement. He has one in a truck behind the shop for $3000. Belongs to a friend of his that was going to sell it anyway. Any better deals in a hour of desperation? I still have the Ranger that I can flop the plate back to. Its just not getting any better. The good new is.... It can't get any worse. I like the truck but don't want to push it around for amusement.

The engine is suspect at best, spelled TOAST. Engine in a truck behind the shop that has mine for $3000. 155K mi motor. Mine had 125 so not much trade there. Reman motor on the office floor I could have at their cost for $8400. Oh, but it has a new turbo.... I heard the one in the back of the shop run. It idled anyway. Roached the transfer case, which locked up, and snapped the driveshaft and flogged the trans to pieces but the engine is still ok. $5600 out the door. I am so upsidedown in this thing. Thanks for the help and research.

Oh, they tried to imply that my TSPerformance chip, set on +75 horsepower may have been the culprit. The Bullydog chip that came out of it was rated higher than that. I let them know and that ended that line. Shop owner, who drove the truck, claimed he didn't know it had a chip at all. The mechanic doing the work said today he knew it had something in it because of all his experience with the whole range of 7.3s he's dealt with.

Aaron, the one in Charlotte had missing parts and other issues but thanks for the heads up.

The truck is back together. Needed a waterpump, no big deal. Swapped an injector from the old motor to the new one. Have the old engine to play with at my leisure. Now, he won't let me have it back. Seems he has never seen and doesn't know anyone that has ever seen an injector fail as this one did. I agree with him. Keep it til you get it worked out. The possible player is fuel starvation. No fuel to backfill the injector between firings and the high pressure piston that forces the fuel into the cylinder hit dry. This caused the little bitty piston inside the injector to bottom out on the cylinder end and break it. Catastrophy. Doesn't want the problem to be a $100 fuel pump and destroy another $3000 engine. I can support that view. He did agree that the tuner was not the issue. Knows several guys that boost to near +200 horses and flog the dog doo out of their trucks all day long and no failures like this. More as it comes.
