If you could make a hydrogen generator big enough to run your car without gasoline, the alternator wouldn't be able to replace the electricity in the battery it would take to produce the hydrogen. You cannot use an electric motor to power a vehicle with battery and drive an alternator to charge itself. When you build an isolated energy system, you will only have so much potential energy available to be used. You will lose a portion when the energy changes states. The rest will be used to power your machine. If you used that machine to solely replenish its fuel, it will never refill the energy source. Because fact that the laws of physics do not change, you cannot produce more energy than you have available.
Now if you had a tank and filled it with hydrogen like you do gasoline, then used that tank to run the car is a different story all together.
