you must have the mortar mix already. I would not reccomend using that in the floor - I'd go buy the quickrete or readymix with the gravel already in it. Just mix it so that it is a good medium mix - not too wet (it should not slop around). You want a good firm mixture. Just pat it with the back of a shovel or side of a 2x4 - that will work the aggregates down and slurry to the top. When it gets firm you can take a normal broom and brush it for the broom finish or take a trowel when it's still wet and slick it off.
