I cheated on mine. I wanted to use a stock type radiator. My water pump inlet went toward the driver side, on the donor engine. I removed all the accessories off of it (fan, belts, pulleys), and ran it for a minute or so (not long as it had no coolant in it) to get it timed right. Then I took the water pump off and got a new one with the inlet on the pass side. It covers the timing mark up, but I don't care... To do it right you would need to replace the timing cover, water pump, timing pointer, and harmonic balancer with an EB setup. Everything from the EB 302 is 28oz balance, just like a 351w is, so you would be good to go.
My uncle said the timing marks are underneath. He too said to crank it w/o all the pullys and stuff but was really hesitant on doing that. I'd like to view the timing marks from up top. How can that be done??? I have plenty of old longblock 302s!!! I figure since I'm replacing the cam I might be able to change the location of the timing marks too.:banghead:
UPDATE: I bought a FlowKooler (#1681) this afternoon for $80. Also got new hoses for $35. Should be here by this weekend.
