cash for clunkers=the end
#1
Working at a dealership I am learning how this new law works. If you trade in your car you can get 15k from the feds.
But, your trade in must be crushed. After the engine is blown up.
NOT KIDDING, we have instructions to pull the trades into the shop. Blow the motors, then send them to the crusher. Were not sure if anything can be stripped off, but it looks like they must go as they came in.
The salvage yards are not going to be as full as they used to.
I know we need to change our gas use, I think this is too extreme.
Sad times.

Does sound sort of extreme. I agree that there are a few vehicle I've seen on the road that should be crushed, but someone's junk in another's treasure.

Then you know how dealer's work. If the Fed's give you $15k toward your purchase, the new vehicle will depreciate $15k as soon as you leave the lot. So the $30k vehicle that you paid $15k for is now only worth $15k or less. I don't think it will be good in the long run for domestic automakers who are already on shaky ground.

I think China or Japan already has a similar law. After so many years vehicles are taken off the roads. They are then scrapped, recycled, or parted out to other countries. I ran into a Mazda engine that was from Asia. It was a totally different animal from anything that is sold in the US. Ended up cross referencing a timing belt from a Honda to get it back running. Also where do you think all these cheap little Asian tractors have been coming from?

The deal is $3500 for a car that gets 4mpg better than the old one. $4500 for one that gets 10 mpg better than the old one. For a truck or suv it's $3500 for 2mpg better and $4500 for 6mpg or better. No $15000. The car has to have been built '84 or later and owned and insured for at least 1 yr prior to trade in. All on a new car that costs less than $45000. No H-1 Hummers on this deal. The total pool of gov money is $1B. When its gone, its gone until they add to the pot because the "right" people didn't get a new car. There is a web site that lists the epa estimated mileage of cars now. Can't remember what it is, tough. Ends with .gov. I think Matt is right on the crushing thing, though. No salvage allowed. No buying a clunker for $500 and trading it through the system. But see if that doesn't happen.

Thanks Tim. I found this info also snooping around on the net.

Quote:The US government released the Cash For Clunkers Program 2009, and there has been a serious boost in car sales due to this. With the boost in demand also comes an increase in questions the public has about this program. Here are the main pointers:
  • You must be able to drive the car to the dealership (no tow-in allowed)
  • You must be the owner of the car for at least a year
  • You must have had the car registered and insured to your name for at least a year
  • You must be buying a NEW vehicle
  • To get $3,500 you must buy a car with at least 4 MPG better than the clunker
  • To get $4,500 you must buy a car with at least 10 MPG better than the clunker

How do you "blow a motor" in the shop?
I mean on purpose ... I can do all kinds of stuff by accident!

The only part of this that sounds decent to me is, some guy gets to blow up motors. On purpose. And get paid to do it. The rest sucks though. They will be crushing the kind of junk that I buy and drive.
Stupid hurts when it catches up, and it WILL catch up!
