What's your plan for the the rear? That might dictate what you'll end up doing to the front in the future.

I was thinkin ford 9 inch but not sure what they are rated for as far as tire size. If I can stack my chips hopefully I will run across somethin better ive heard d 60s are $ but the gm 14 bolt are stong but a dime a dozen

Bone the same goes for the rear axle. The 8.8 and 9" are both pretty much rated to a 35" tire. In my opinion the 9" really isn't that much stronger than the 8.8. Some will say different but if your going to up grade axles you might as well jump to a 60. Especially if your thinking up in the 37-38 range you will blow both the 8.8 and 9" away if you start putting gears and lockers. You could move up to a 60 FF, 10.25 FF rear axle and have some reliable strength. Then you could either sas a D44 with 8 lug outers, or swap TTB outers to 8 lug if you are really that interested in keeping it.

Kenny, keep in mind with your computer that you need a speed sensor that mounts in the rearend housing.I think someone makes an adapter for the 9'' but it may be pricey. My plans if I ever upgrade my axles would be a I think 90 or 91 up 10.25'' rear from a computor shifted F-250/350.they carry the tone ring and speed sensor like the half tons and your transmission will shift. This will however mean 8-lug wheels.:xyxthumbs:

The rear will be cheap and easy. I don't like the 8.8 in a 4x4 because of the c clips that retain the axles. The 9 is sort of universal. It can be built and modified as strong as your pocket book will let you, but there are no 8 lug axles for it. The D60 is a good upgrade, but a Sterling 10.50 is just as easy to find and already has 35 spline axles. The 14 bolt is probably marginally stronger. You just have to find a cab and chassis width drw axle to get one that is not too wide.

When you get ready to look for a rear axle, your best place to shop is the pull-a-part yard. Your looking at $100 or less. Sometimes you can luck up and find a front. You better get it when you do, because it will not last long.

well I know the last thing I wanna see is the axle walk out on me. is there a way around the whole speed sensor deal? I know its important but I dont want it to get in the way of my plans. Well in other words does it limit my options?

If you want your tranny to shift and think that's important, then, well, your options are limited. If you've got VSS, there's no way around it. VSS can be adapted to non-VSS axles, but it takes some work. I know there's a company that makes a VSS that can be attached at the transfer case so you can throw any axle under there and it will work.

You can get a C clip eliminator kit for the 8.8. I've put a couple on Mustang axles. I don't remember what they cost.
