1979 bronco

hi i bought a 79 bronco yesterday and the motor has definetly ben out
my queston is i am trying to figure out what motor it is it most likely should have a 351 or 400 m but i dont think it is. i have a 77 pu with a 351m and the motor in the bronco the intake is 1/2 bigger with the rocker arm cover has 8 bolts. on the left side of the motor the casting comes out 2 1/2 inches on the pickup it only comes out 2 incher the casting number is d7te-a28

do any of you know how to desipher these numbers other than the d stands for made in the 1970's

Both the 400 and 351M use the same casting #'s for the blocks. Therefore externally there is no positive way to distinguish the two. The only difference is the crank and pistons, so to ID you will need to measure the stroke. There is no really accurate way to check it without pulling a head off. Though, when I was looking for a 400 core in the junkyard, I used a zip ty in the spark plug hole. I found an engine that the ty moved more than the others and pulled a head to measure the stroke with a tape measure to confirm.

d7 = 1977 those broncos came from the factory with 351m or 400 . unless someone has done an engine swap over the years to something different. can you post a pic of the engine or valve covers.

5 VC bolts= 360/390 (FE)
6 VC bolts= 302/351W (Small blocks)
7 VC bolts= 429/460 (385 series)
8 VC bolts= 351M/400 (335 series)
