Hello all!
I dont actually live in NC yet, but it seems I probably will be moving to Charlotte soon. I'm in Boise ID now, and have been since I was a kid. It'll be a big change from Rocky Mountains and high desert, but 9 hours closer to the beach!
I'm currently rebuilding (or rather, occasionially working on) a '78 Ranger Trailer Special with (so far) a 460, C6 w/lower 1st gear cluster, and a D60. Still playing around with suspension, tire, and wheel possibilities, and rock crawling is the direction.
I should probably find out about lift and emissions laws in the area...
Any resources I could check out?
Anyway, I look forward to checking out the NC area off roading scene one way or another.

Welcome aboard! I live in Charlotte. Never been out your way (other than flying over it). No desert out here, but plenty of hot weather and humidity! We do get a dusting of snow now and again. Uwharrie Natl Forest is the closest place to wheel around here, about 1.25 hours from Charlotte.
Have fun with the move. You will have some titling issues with the DMV. Anything out of state that is over 30 yrs old needs to be inspected by the DOT. It is a real pain in the butt! No emissions laws on anything pre- ODBII now (96 and earlier). Unsure of lift laws. I think there is a bumper height law, but that is about it. Hope all goes well with the move out here!

welcome aboard. when i titled the 79 that i bought last yr. it was originally an ohio title and didnt have to have it inspected. i just took title to dmv and got it transfered and tagged. but maybe i just slipped it through. you will have 1 yr to have it inspected but it will just be a safety inspection.
If you can't fix it with a hammer and a welder then your gonna need a new one!

Welcome to the group. The state inpection laws are very simple, any vehicle 35 years and older has no inspection. Any vehicle younger than 35 but not a 96 and newer would have a saftey only inspecton (except for saftey only countys but your not moving to one). In which you are supposed to have all emissions equipment that it orignialy came with. Doesnt have to be working just there. As an inspector it is often overlooked on trucks of that era unless they look to be something that might get them in trouble. I have been an inspector for the last 7 years and recently had a long talk with the dmv guy about the out of state title issue (I was asking about my 71 cc). He explaned it this way, anything out of state that was that old would have to have the DMV inspector verify the vin in person within one year of registration. If not done in that year you would not get a title back from nc, just be able to regester it. He even told me if the truck didnt have a motor they would not give the title untill they could check the numbers on the motor. Its an easy process, you can drive it by any of the dmv offices or make an appointment and they will come to you.
As for the lift laws they are on the dmv web site but again, they are rarely enforced unless you make a trooper mad at you.
Be sure to make it too our URE run in the fall or our meetngreet in the spring.

I actually found the site by searching "North Carolina Broncos" in that googly thing.
I hope that the engine codes are just for the number recorders and not to verify vin, since my 460 is NOT the stock motor (lol) and quite a few years older than my Bronco. Luckily it won't need to have it's exhaust sniffed...The frame and body are a good match, though.
Nice to know my '94 F-350 is going to be ok, too.
BTW, I prefer the earlier Bronco bodystyle, but they're made of unobtanium out here. Add that to the fact that '73-'79 (and newer) F series parts are sold by the ton, and my choice was pretty abvious.
If we do move out there, anybody know of a straight EB body and frame that I could drop my running gear in? A built 460 may be a little overkill, but I've always thought that too much means always having enough.
Anyway, it's nice to know that there is an off-road community out there.
