I did get my citations dropped and the officer's supervisor told me that he was wrong to do the Level 2 inspection on me since I was an individual, not a company and not making money. The citations were dropped so they will not appear on my "record."

I still have to pay my over weight fine, but the satisfaction of proving the officer wrong was good. Who knows if he got in trouble, but it's sad that an officer who pulls me over and "teaches" me the law doesn't have a clue what the law really is.

I ended up getting a weight rated P-tag up to 16,000 lbs and had to pay $92 / year.

Hey Robert, in your dealings with the law!!! What's the deal that some folks put the: "Private- not for Hire" stuff on their trucks, does that really get you anything???

I think the reasoning behind that is b/c they look to be commercial but are not and it's a way of letting the DOT know that they are not in "commerce" - or "making money" with their load. Then again, I've seen that on business trucks too so not 100% positive.

The law does state that if you are over 10,000 lbs and in commerce, you must have your company name visible on your vehicle - even if it's a door magnet. Maybe the "not for hire" is the proper way of saying I'm over 10,000 lbs but not in commerce.

Good deal Robert, I'm glad to hear that citations were dropped. Thanks for taking a hit on this one and dropping some "towing laws" knowledge on us all. :xyxthumbs:
