I am going to put in an AOD
I want to keep shifter on column
WHat are my possible choices and why
If possible I'd like to know what vehicles and years the possible choices are sourced from

Aod vs aode vs 4r70w and in that order with aod being weakest. They are also in order of expense with aod being cheapest. There are a ton of vehicles out there. Narrow down your trans selection first. Do a search on here for 4r70w and you will find my writeup so you can see what you are getting into. Bellhousing and torque converter are the same amongst the three variants so it is engine dependent at that point in terms of imbalance. I love my trans.

Chuzie, he is running a huge 351w, pre-roller cam block. IIRC, all 351's are the same imbalance but I forget which one. Thanks for the input.

Let me throw this out there, what are the downsides to an AOD? Is it not a C4 with overdrive? The first gear isn't lowered as much as a 4r70w correct? There has got to be a reason why I don't see many bronco owners using this tranny. For someone who barely leaves the pavement it would seem to be the bet option. Or was the AOD just crap?

It is not a C4 with OD due to the difference is gear design.
For someone who wants the basic simplicity of an autonomous setup I would go with the AOD and throw 4r70w guts in it just realize you lose the adjustability of the electronic transmission. For a mustang, this is not an issue, for a jacked up bronco, it could be; really depends on the situation. I would not hang my decision to go one way or other other solely on the amount of time spend on the pavement or not. It is more about affordability and simplicity (or lack thereof).
The drawbacks of the AOD:
Small overdrive band susceptible to failure (upgradable with AOD-E or 4R70W internals)
Weak input shaft prone to failure (upgradable)
High TC failure rate (linked to input shaft issues) (upgradable)
Weak TV linkage issues (upgradable)
I misspoke earlier when I said the converters are the same. The AOD-E and 4R70W have variable lockup converters where the AOD has a fixed lockup converter so they are NOT interchangeable.
If you go with the AOD, I suggest you upgrade the above items and go to the TCCOA website and read more about upgrading other items. Most folks do 4R guts in the AOD and I am sure you can do the same.
