'77 Bronco 4bt Conversion
#1
I had my Bronco on the road about 6 weeks ago and tore up the C4 forward hub ID spline. Based my recent measurements this weekend I don't believe there was adequate torque converter hub engagement into the crankshaft adapter bore causing the hardened input shaft to "chatter" and eat the hub ID splines. The input shaft shows no damage. On Sunday I designed a new torque converter to flexplate adapter plate (replaces the wavy ring) to provide the basic engagement. Hope to have the adapter plate finished by Friday and reinstall the C4 this weekend. While I was rebuilding the C4 a couple of weekend ago I installed a Art Carr manual reverse shift valvebody with engine braking for 1st gear. Which means I know longer have to figure out a way to provide vacuum to the modulator. The Ford powerstroke vacuum pump that I mounted to the engine will only be used to provide a constant 25" vacuum to the brake booster.

Hope I don't tear the C4 up again. I have yet to start "turning up" the little diesel.

Nice job! I've seen several of these swaps on Pirate and ClassicBroncos. But your the first I've seen run a C4. I guess most run the Dodge NV4500, but I have seen a couple with the GM 700r4. Do you have any pics of how you mated the C4 to the 4BT? Have you thought about running a C6? There is a diesel version that has a little more beef in the input and low/reverse planetaries. The IDI runs a vacuum regulator valve on the top of the pump to send signal to modulator.

Thanks for the encouraging comments. I did consider a C6 but of course I had the C4 & D20 and wanted to maintain similar driveshaft lengths. Knowing I was going to have to move the transmission slightly back. The C6 probably would have been an overall easier swap but for some reason I don't always take the easy road. Confusedcratchhe: I did have a special E40D torque converter built for it that is very similar to the ones used for the Powerstrokes. I do have photos... but I lost my photo posting site a few months ago. I will try to load them up on another site this weekend.

Not sure I will be able to get the adapter plate out of the machine shop today... but hopefully I will have it next week.

Here are some photos of the '77 Bronco Clessie conversion. Hope to group them and add more information in the future.

Below's a little bit about Cummins "conversion" history ...
Clessie's 1st conversion was a 1925 Packard during the early days of the company. Clessie also converted an Auburn and drove it from New York to San Francisco on $7.62 worth of diesel in 1935. Even with a Volkswagon TDI we can only go from Charleston to Columbia on that today...

Hope this subject is not too far off base for the CB4x4 forum...
