It does a couple things. If you are ever 2" left or right of your hitch it is handy.
Usually when you pull straight forward it straightens out and locks.
Next thing is notice the barn doors on the back of the suburban?
Imagine loading stuff in and out of it with a 2" ball on top of a hitch hanging off there.
Granted I am made of steel and it wouldn't bother me, but for mortal men scraping your shin on that repeatedly would turn into a pretty crippling experience.
Let alone putting a nice big scratch in the screen of your tv as it slides down across it when your buddy says he has it, but really doesn't.
