i was told that a lost title in nc from an out of state vehicle was a real pita to get.
once granted a trooper will come by and check it out to make sure it is road worthy and if approved by him you simply send off the paper work and wait on the title.

I had a similiar problem, where the guy I bought my truck from did not have a title nor was he the last owner to have it registered. I had to send 5$ and a letter to the DMV asking for a letter of varification. Which along with a bill of sale SC will let you register your truck. Maybe NC has the same rules?

I think your best bet would be to get another title and vin tag.

A guy I work with bought a Baja VW with CA title. It has been a nightmare to get his title back. The state man has been to his place twice to check out the car. One of the big hold ups has been that since it has a narrowed fiberglass front end the corner under bonnet that had the vin stamped was cut off. He still has the stamping and it matches the one on the tranny tunnel. But the state inspector wants to be an ass about it being visible.

I spoke to the dmv inspector the last time he was at the dealership. He said since it was last titled and registered in NC I would need to chase it down.
If I swapped the door vin tag and title it would have to be a NC title or they will have to come out and inspect the truck to verify the vin(which would not match if I had swapped them). That is a new law as of 2/08.
If it was sold to someone in GA or NH, with a bill of sale(I'm told thats all they reqire as long as the vin matches the frame) it should be allowed to be registerd. Not sure if ga offers titles to those older vins or not.
The dmv inspector would still need to come and verify the the GA title matches the vin tag and frame(which reminds me I need to have him come inspect my crew cab), but atleast that way they would match. They cant inspect it for saftey at that point, just to verify that its correct.
I think I see a trip to GA in my future.
