Chuzie's '77 Project

Xfer case is split from tranny and bellhousing is removed. I think I will give my rebuilder the courtesy of a somewhat clean tranny to work with so tomorrow I will scrub it down as best I can and likely drop it off on Thursday.

Well looks like I am going to be rebuilding my C4 on my own. Can't find anyone to do it for less than $600 :crying:

I guess I will drop the $150 on a good performance rebuild kit, $20 on the Hayned book, and go to town on it in my spare time. So instead of a 2-3 day rebuild I am looking at a 2-3 month rebuild.

What a croc.

I will keep posting the progress.

why not buy the kit...then get joey to build it for the $300 as he said...atleast thats quicker and cheaper than a serious messup on your part. Not that you cant do it, but you and I have never done anything like this before. Check with bucketobolts...he has rebuilt a few C4's...maybe he has some great advice!!

I figure if I can rebuild a million dollar jet engine for an F-15 I can certainly take on a C4.

However it is not a matter of skill or ability but rather TIME. How much is my time worth, how much is it worth to have the bronco down for X amount of days?

I don't know. It is hot as crap outside and I don't see how much fun I can possibly have in the heat with a Bronco with zero A/C. This may be a good opportunity to suck it up and accept the down time and save a few bucks. If I screw up it will be expensive no matter how I look at it but at least I can say I gave it a try.

I just had someone offer up an AODE from a '94 Thunderrbird with 150K miles and will throw in the flywheel, driveshaft, etc for $150.00

Is that a good deal?

Should I go for an AOD or stick with my C4?

Ok. Nevermind. I just answered my own question with a little research. I am not willing to make all the necessary modifications to install the AOD on my rig. By the time I pay for the mods I will exceed the $$$ I save by purchasing the tranny as a bolt on app.

If anyone else is interested in this purchase let me know and I will hook you up with the guy. I think it is a pretty good deal though.

Here is the list of parts I am working on getting a quote on from Transtar in Charlotte for my rebuild.

Part Number/Qty/Nomenclature
26006C 1 REBUILD KIT WITH STEELS
26022BHD 1*** FRONT BAND (solid non flex type) Sub R26022B if 26022BHD is not available only if R26022B is for 65-67 relined and NOT 1964 only hard band.
A26912 1 REAR SERVO PISTON
26036A 1 BUSHING, FRONT STATOR
26037 1 BUSHING, REAR STATOR
26010D 1 OIL FILTER SCREEN
36034B 1** PUMP BUSHING C-6
A26530 1 PUMP GEAR SET, C-4/C-5
26046A 1 DIRECT DRUM BUSHING

UPS delivered the parts from Transtar today and after I double checked to make sure ALL the parts were accounted for and correct I started the teardown.

I only got a few things done tonight because I am going very slow to make sure I label all the parts and don't miss a thing. All the bolts are labeled and I have marked position on most everything I can.

I got the valve body and the struts. Also pulled the servos, band adjusting bolts, modulator, etc. Just the easy outer items first. Had a couple surprise gushes of fluid to clean up but that is it. So far smooth sailing. More to come tomorrow. I get to start with the endplay measurement but only if the dial indicator I bought on ebay shows up. Otherwise I will just use my feeler gages to check. I think they are just as accurate anyway but the book calls for the dial indicator at the input shaft rather than a feeler gage at the input shell. Whatever.

This ain't so bad yet.

I told the wife that since she screwed me out of my river rock weekend that I am getting that transmission done by sunday. By done I mean rebuilt, not installed.
