URE Trails Wishlist - December 12, 2015

All,

The next Uwharrie Rendezvous is coming up December 12, 2015.
The purpose of the Rendezvous is to get together and chat with other clubs, and the USFS about our OHV trail system, and go over plans and goals for the OHV system.

We want to really try to see what we can do to help clubs on their adopted trails to get them up to snuff and keep them there. And to get people more involved.

*** Fellow CB4X4 members, we need your input!! ***

Post up in this thread your wishes, concerns, ideas, etc. pertaining to the OHV trails.
We need as much input as we can get.

There will be at least a couple members of CB4X4 there to take part in the meeting,
so even if you can't make it let us know here what is on your mind about the trails,
our involvement with the Dutch John Trail, and any ideas you may have to ensure the
trails at URE will stay open in the future.

Great thread idea.

- eliminate or contain dispersed camping areas

- require ID to be linked with a trail pass


This one will probably get me kicked out:

- trail closure when the trails are saturated.

Nothing specific to Dutch John. More thoughts?


FYI- I did get a very official letter from the USFS with plans on the new proposed 2 mile trail. Sounds like its a go!

This is what I wrote down so far:

More Patrol/fines/arrests/confiscations.

More specific communication of item(s) and the order of their importance of work/issues that needs to be addressed by the club/clubs responsible for the trail.
Right now it is very vague and it is difficult to "guess" what needs to be done.

Eliminate camping in the trial system, only at trailheads in designated areas.

More sinage at trail heads. ie: difficulty ratings of the trail they are about to go on.

Would there be a possibility for Motorcycles/ATV on a couple of horse trails that run through the OHV area to given them a place to ride without
having to go around 4wheeled vehicles.

Temporary closures when extremely heavy rains come through the area.

Open up/re-open trails for more area to ride.

Water Bars - most of the water bars act as chutes to divert water and mud down the hill. Needs to be a catch basin to
catch silt run-off at the end of the water bars.

One thing that would be nice to know - apparently they know where the archeological sites are and where they are located. Are there any
areas where there aren't any archeology sites that would be in danger if new trails were made through those areas.


Dutch John Specific:

Close the rutted out hill climb and re-route this part of the trail.

Fill in mud hole near creek create holding pond for dirt/silt

Get rid of or at least break up big rock after creek crossing hill climb

Move the first creek crossing (one with curve in it) for a straighter path through creek (possible culvert)
this will require a few trees to be removed and heavy equipment to be used.

Love the ideas ecspecially linking trail pass to DL, maybe to add to that they can link each trail pass to a vehicle could the FS put up dear cameras at random spots and times to watch for people throwing stuff out of thier rig or camping where they are not supposed to and write tickets acordingly.

Gona try to make it out for this.

I read the previous post last night and let it soak in over night. In my opinion closing the trails due to heavy rains is a risky precedent to set. Who will make such a determination? What will be there manner of assessing what is acceptable and what is not? This would give the neigh sayers ammunition for closing the entire trail system at all times. People move on, how will the new boss handle this new power?
As far as stopping camping along the trails, some people look at primitive camping the same way we look at wheeling. Its their hobby/stress relief. The world we live in has enough Laws/Rules already. Enforce the ones already on the books. Be careful when you stir the pot. It may boil over and you'll end up with more rules than you asked for.

I too do not feel rain closure is a good idea but we all have our opinion.

I am confused what you think linking DL to a pass will do other than give the gov't another way of big brothering the crap out of us.

We need a system in which we can hold idiots accountable for breaking the rules.

I want to know what is going on with RML and Kodak. This is ridiculous!

They know where a lot of sites are but there are many that have yet to be uncovered. Every time a rock moves is a risk of uncovering some BS site that is going to kill a trail.

We need to keep the silt out of the creek! Ponds Ponds Ponds!

My issue with trail usage when muddy is erosion. The trails took a beating last weekend. All the mtn bike trails here in Charlotte all close when wet and reopen a day or two later. It helps a lot with wear and tear.

My idea to link the pass to a person would help for things like the abandoned Explorer left on Dutch John this summer. Really just more accountability. There are way too many yahoos out there. Increasing the usage fee and patrolling would probably do it but they can't up the fee without some huge ordeal and policing doesn't seem to be a priority.

If things go the way they are going it will be shut down sooner than later. Hate to say that but it is a reality. Kodak was shut down in large part due to dispersed camping off the trail. I will bet anything that it will never reopen.

Last year we were told that there were 5 arch sites on the USFS radar. They wouldn't disclose the locations because they thought we would take artifacts from them- at least that is what I took from it. The govt doesn't work in a way that makes sense to me.

i can see both sides of this...trail closure sucks, but that being said...of all the trails-the only one i see that would benefit from closing due to heavy rain fall would be dutch john. 1) its undoable!2) causes a lot of damage due to numerous attempts, washing the debris down to the creeks.3) one that becomes very dangerous when attempting it upwards or downwards. but how to govern it?? i dont think closing it due to a certain amount of rainfall would work-heck it can rain on one side of the mountain but not the other, so the only way would be using a guy familiar with trails and conditions to make a decision like closing it a day or two if needed.i dont see any other trails affecting the creeks quite like dutch john.as for camp site on the trails...we do need something to hold ppl accountable. those are the main sites we see majority of the problems. those using those sites-do so for drinking,wheeling,and raising hell. they wont stay at a "paying" site...so they can get "away" with what they do. yes some ppl, just like the rugged outdoors effect and do their best to keep it looking nice. i think some kind of info/per camper would make them think a little harder about trashing the place. but even that would require someone to inspect those sites every weekend day and probably one or twice during each week. lets face, the majority of crap we pick up...IS BEER CANS! so it wouldnt hurt to see the rangers on the trails more...i dont remember the last time ive seen one. used to see them every weekend around kodak rock, because of all the ppl watching. the last time i saw one at the double lot was when i had to make a paper tag for FBG, cuz i left my real tag home.i also think more signs are needed, and as for ppl jumping off the trails....why not something simple and light weight like chain-link fencing??? would be simple as hell to install. sure section will get damaged....but no dirt bike and avt are gonna -GO THROUGH IT without damage to themselves. they can overlay sections with a 1' gap or so to allow hikers to move through them. for me, i think the atv and riders...cause the bigger issues...they wont pack out what they pack in PERIOD. im sure i can come up with more, but im at work...so thats all for now.
