take a large long screw driver and be sure all the shift forks are slid forward or backwards so the shifter will drop straight in...been there done that. no need to remove the cover...even a pry bar might be better. look in the hole with a flash light and you will see where the ball of the shifter should sit. if you had to put the shifter in 2nd-then move the shift rails back one click. if you had the shifter forward into low or 3rd...then move the rails forward 1 click.
