The '77s also had an ignition module on the fenderwell as well as the external regulator on the firewall if not mistaken. Had a Ford station wagon that had an ignition module that would get hot and quit working. After it cooled it would start again. TDC #1 can be right or 180* out. Pull the dist cap off and verify the rotor is near #1 position, balancer mark is aligned correctly then try to start while watching the rotor. It should just rotate as normal. If there is a broken tooth on dist or cam it will skip. I really don't think skipped timing is the issue but easy to check and rule out.
