Frankly, skipping is unlikely. If something when wrong with the timing it would be a broken gear or chain. Some of those sets were made of plastic or nylon which can wear down and the teeth can break off and end up in the bottom of the oil pan. Do what Tim said and it will tell you a lot and eliminate the timing as the culprit.
