My 76 repairs.
#21
Well, this happened yesterday. I was driving to work and I was coming off the highway exit ramp when I lost my brakes doing around 50mphConfusedhock:. I pressed the brake peddle and it went striaght to the floor. Luckily the light turned green and I was able to swerve around a couple cars without having to engage the E-brake. I drove about another mile to work (slowly), pulled into the parking lot, jumped out and found that the rear rubber brake line from the axle to the frame was just barely touching the exhuast which burned a hole through it. So with a pair of Robo grips and some Channel locks (only tools I could find at the office) I was able to pull the line off. I went to the local Parks bought the new part installed it in the parking lot at work. Did I mention that it was +100* and I was laying on the black asphalt. I did not have a wrench to bleed the brakes so I drove home (carefully) and Chuck came by before the CB meeting and helped me bleed the lines out. I was able to drive it to the meeting, and all is well.:xyxthumbs:

Good thing nothing bad happened to you or anyone else. Asw long as I stay on level ground, my biggest fears are brakes failing and loosing power steering while driving.

My next repair is the power steering pump. I inadvertenly dented the housing durning the last engine repair (big screw driver pry bar loosening the belt to remove it) :banghead:, and has developed an anoying leak. Anyways I have priced a replacement pump at around $50 and new hoses for another $40.

Question?...

Is the saginaw pump conversion worth the extra cost (not sure the $) for the bracket, pump, and lines?

I'm not doing any hard core wheeling, as the Bronco is my daily driver and spends 95% of its life on the road.

I did the Sagi pump change the last two months. I'm very happy with it so far. With the 37s I needed it. You may be able to get away with factory pump since you are rolling 33s. I pd $85 for dual return PS Sagi pump (from Scrapman on Classic Bronco website), $60 for WHs all-in-one bracket kit (had to modify this bracket, not made for dual return Sagi pump), $13 for Napa fitting for PS pump and $24 for Napa pulley (plus fluids). I had a newer hi pressure on my bronco so I didn't replace it, but Napa sells a new one for around $23, all other lowpressure hoses are regular 3/8" hoses that are fairly cheap. I wrote up a build thread on it.

If you do decide to go dual return Sagi, make sure the pivot bracket has the notch already cut out. If not the dual return will not fit.

Thanks for the Info Crawdad. I've been following your power steering thread and how you had to notch the bracket. I'm glad to see it all worked out for you.

So what I'm reading is that for around $150-200 I can do the Saginaw conversion. I understand that it performs better than the ford OEM pump.

Thanks Snipes. Thats a good price for the pump. I would still have to buy the bracket, hoses, and pulley?, etc.

I think I decided to go with cheaper solution for now.

When I decide to go with bigger tires (35" +) I will factor the Sagi pump into the build along with gears and suspension. I'm not going too open that can of worms anytime soon.
