306 EFI build
#61
well, that sucked!! FML...just pulled everything off the front of the block. i really had no idea if the cam shaft bolt was clearing the explorer cover...now i know!

and in the process of removing the timing cover, i just so happened to completely destroy the brand new 1 piece oil pan gasketanother $30 down the drain.

guess i need to grind the bolt now and buy all new gaskets

better to find it and fix it now than after it's all installed.

What led you to remove it to find the problem?

Read a few tech articles that mentioned it, I didn't notice anything when I installed cover. So I needed to be sure

I have heard of the cam bolts hitting but never knew anybody who actuly had it happen. Glad you caught it right away.
You can move the plug wires down so that the dist fits, You can also make a custom harness to move the modual off the dist but its a bunch of work that often falls apart. My preferance was to move all the wires over once so I could clock the dist.
Sucks about the gaskets, too bad you couldent save them.

well, i found out it's not that easy Matt...the TFI and computer are timed to the #1 on the cap. which means, if i move the wires one-over...my fuel injectors will be firing at the wrong time. Im gonna trim the AC/PW steering bracket some..I think that will be all that needs to be done. wont really know til I drop the distr. in and fire it up.

i was hoping to drop the motor in this weekend coming. Dont think that is gonna happen right now. I need to replace at the gaskets. I would like th\o install new timing set, and order the plug wires. of coarse I was checking out the free distr and it looks really nasty...lots of dirt and debris inside it. full loaded distr is $100...UGH!

Next trip to the junk yard you might be able to find the stuff to make a remote TFI mount. I thought about doing this mod when/if I put the Explorer front dress on mine.
