So I don't have to have the pinion and the 3rd lined up in some special way when I attach it back? Just make sure the gears fit in together and tighten it up (not with an impact).

In a nut shell, yes.
Everything is already done for you since nothing was really changed. Had the caps been loosened, it would have been a different story.
Since that is not the case and you have the depth shim(s), you should have the same numbers as before.

Carefully install the pinion into the 3rd before you install it into the axle housing to ensure everything goes back together nicely. Just because it is welded doesn't mean you shouldn't take care in handling and ensuring it remains free of debris and contamination.

My personal preference is liquid gasket but that is a can-o-worms debate I care not to engage on the forum.

I have a 4.11 third member out of a 72 which should fit any early bronco with 28 spline. You can borrow it as I plan to put it in my build if I don't like the 3.50s already in the 77 rearend. It's here if u need it.
